Jewelry Tax
« on: June 21, 2008, 01:31:39 PM »
I will be brining a couple of pieces of jewelry into Ukraine. Every time I've gone through customs on the way in they have asked about gifts. I've not brought anything of value before. Does anyone know what the rules are and how much the "tax" is on items you bring into the country?

Here's something that might help:

You can bring the following items in Ukraine duty free:

USD 10,000 cash and/or travel checks or less (please note, you should declare the amount if it exceeds USD 1,000 to be able to bring it out of Ukraine)
USD 50,000 or less in checks (subject of customs declaration)
Up to 100 grams (0,22 lbs) of jewelry (subject of customs declaration)
Up to 50 kg (110 lbs) of goods with the total value up to EUR 200 (USD $240)
Cigarettes/Tobacco: up to 20 packs (cigarettes) or 200 grams (0.44 lbs)
Food with the total value up to EURO 50 (USD $60)
Alohol: up to 2 liters of 40% alcohol (rum, whiskey, vodka, cognac etc.), up to 1 liter of wine, up to 2 liters of beer

Really, though, about the only reason you would need to declare something is if you intend to take it back out of Ukraine and need to show it was brought in and therefore not subject to taxes.

I have routinely brought in small pieces of jewelry as gifts without declaring them and have never had a problem.  Unless you bring in very expensive items or a quantity such that it appears they are for resale, you should have no problems.
