Hotels in St Petersburg
« on: June 26, 2008, 12:02:33 PM »
Probally been posted before but too much information to search thru. I will just ask

Recommendations on hotels in St Petersburg, Russia. Peferably within walking distance of most of the hub of activity.

I dont want to book a dump. Willing to spend the money, within reason, for a comfortable and safe hotel.

Flying into the St Petersburg airport.

Any reason you want a hotel instead of apartment rental? A good hotel in the city center will cost upwards of $250 per night while an apartment can be had for around $100. You can also count on being hassled if you want to bring a woman up to your hotel room.

Why would you be hassled? I guess I dont understand.

I do believe you get what you pay for. Why are the apartments so cheap? sounds like a good deal. Whats different about them then a hotel?

I'm new and learning.

Welcome! The hub of activity in St. Petersburg for most is Nevsky Prospekt. There are many apartments and very nice ones to for rent in this area. Lots of shops, restaurants, clubs, the metro, sightseeing and bars. I never saw it at a slow time. Reminds me a lot of NYC. There are even a few western style supermarkets. Apartments offer some additional freedoms you can get in even some of the nicer hotels. Come and go as you please, limiting your visitors to cooking meals. Few FSU ladies are willing to go to your room for fear of being tagged as or called a prostitute. If you are visiting for the ladies it is advantageous to have an apartment. If your visit is for something else a hotel may be more your preference

Unless you're paying for two people per night, many hotels will not approve of your bringing a guest to your room, even if you have a double bed or large room, reason being you only paid for one person to stay there; it's not like in the west.

Apartments are a much better option, not only are they less expensive but you'll be able to entertain guests, cook your own meals, and wash your own clothes.

I'm not positive why hotels are so outrageously expensive in SPB, Moscow, and Kiev, but I'd guess it's because there are very few Best Western/Holiday Inn type options (i.e., inexpensive, clean, and safe) in the FSU and most upscale hotels cater almost exclusively to business travelers and foreign tourists.

Apartments are also a good option because of the sheer number available for rental. Unlike in the West, when Russian people vacation or visit big cities they almost always rent apartments for their stay. You'll find pretty much anything you wish for, upscale and luxurious, no-frills and safe and clean, etc.

I've stayed here on biz...

http://www.dostoevsky-hotel.ru/offers.en.html

I booked it as part of a package from the UK ... SPb much more expensive during "white nights" ... long summer evenings..

All the advice re apartments holds true.. this is one of the more reasonable very clean modern biz hotels.. right opp metro stn - five mins walk to the main street and the staff speak good English..

Thanks guys

I think I'm understanding now. The apartments might be a great deal if you find the right one. I'm looking into it.

A really nice little Hotel I stayed at in February :) http://eng.art-hotel.ru/
Good price, great location(city center), nice comfortable rooms, very clean, super nice friendly staff and good hot breakfast served in room. Free internet in room (50kb per day) and a discount coupon for Wasabe Sushi Restaurant(s).
