Anyone know of a cell phone plan for international calls?
« on: November 11, 2008, 11:04:42 AM »
I am spending about $150/mo with a calling card, and have started wondering if there is a cell phone plan in the U.S.A. that offers unlimited international calling to Ukraine?  I am not really interested in Skype, as most of my calls are not made from home.

Do any of you know of a cell phone plan?

Thanks

I used NOBEL.COM. (cell phone plan). My wife still uses this service to call her Mom and friends in Russia. They are based in Canada, trustworthy and have cheap rates.

I don't know of any plan with the Big Two providers (Verizon and AT&T) that would allow you unlimited international calling.  If one exists, I'm sure it would be more than $150 a month.

What are you paying per minute?  Some of these calling cards are a rip off.  They don't give you as many minutes as they say you get.  The best and most reliable calling cards I used are from www.enjoyprepaid.com.  Any cell phone company will cost more than a calling card.
Just stating my opinion!  You don't have to agree with it.

I am using a card from enjoy, and it costs about $0.12/minute.  I tried one from lehed.com which was considerably cheaper, but the connection was so bad I went back to the card from enjoy.

Ukraine seems to be one of the more expensive places to call. IIRC Belarus was even more expensive than Ukraine. $.12 is about as cheap as you'll find with one second billing from any place that I know of. I don't believe the cell phone companies will come even close with their plans. You could look into a Vonage or a VOIP plan for when you are home and keep your calling card when on the road. That might save you a few bucks

I'm still a big fan of the Betamax VOIP companies.  A good comparison chart of all the different companies is here: http://www.backsla.sh/betamax  (but of course, the website is down at the moment.  But it isn't run by the phone company, rather by a private individual).

http://www.poivy.com is currently $0.07/min to both landline and mobiles in Ukraine.

http://www.freecall.com is $0.045 to landlines, much higher to mobile phones in Ukraine.

Even though they're a VOIP company, they have local numbers around the world where you can phone on your mobile (or any other phone), and they will recognize your caller ID, saving you from needing to dial a PIN.  Works just like a calling card.

They do bill by the minute, but have none of the junk (maintenance fees, expiration time, etc) that calling cards get you on.

I use PennyTalk. They have full page ads in the national magazines and are trustworthy. But they are only good for calls FROM the U.S.

Russia   .02 a minute            Ukraine .13 a minute

I went with Nobel.com. Inexpensive, and the service was excellent.

After a lot of research I went with speedypin.com, choosing the saphire card. The fee is 11 cents a minute and the connection has een excellent.  I just looked at nobel.com for the first time and that may be another option.  Te keys are that you want the minimal billing increments, no taxes or connection feesand no monthly fees.

I know many advocate skype or other voip, but like you I don't want to be tied down to a computer and I don't have the computer savy to figure out how to make it otherwise.  My wife uses her cell phone and calls whenever and from wherever she wants.  I'll pay the price for the convenience.

I have used noble for 3 years and love it.  Sometimes they give you free minutes for being a good customer too.  You can use local access numbers in any country so works great with a cell phone.

Hello! I also use Nobelcom.com I have a card that can be refilled. I have the whole thing program (phone, phone) into my cell. I call france for about 1.5 cents. (actually better $$$ than skype).
I just checked you can call ukraine for anywhere from 6.9 - 13 cents depends on the card you use. I would call them vs doing everything online. They take forever to answer but they work with you for the best plan and then you just refill.
Oh! depending on your cell plan you can call their remote number and it is all free. Since I call France very early (5am) in the morning on my way to work it is very inexpensive.
good luck, have happy thanksgiving day
