New theory on why K1 visa takes so long
« on: December 14, 2008, 07:52:53 AM »
It is now my new theory that it takes that long for a single man to clean his house.  I am about to hire some pro's lol.  I always thought I did not own that much stuff.  I am wrong.

AND....while you are "cleaning", make sure to get rid of all your cr*p.
If you don't, after your lady arrives, she will do it for you!

It is amazing how much of your junk FSU ladies can get rid of in one day (while you are at work)!

Ok, how much crap I collected is fair.  It is going, going, gone!  Most of it is not even worth anything.  I just have so many closets and did not want them to be lonely.

I figure I better start now, it is going to take months to get all of this out of here.  I actually found my kindergarten report card, looks like I could not tie my shoes very well, but the rest was good.

My garage is a hunting, fishing, and outdoors center on one side.  A garden center on the other.  I just got to get some rhyme or reason to all of this too.  The attic may in fact have a resident squirrel so it has not been wasted effort.  Got to get him out of there before it does some real damage.

Big weekend though Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond.  I got a nice house coming though once I am done.  I even bought some decorations with her while I was there, so that way she can start making it our home.

That is what started the ball rolling, I had to make room for the decorations in a closet.

Don't go nuts decorating now. Let her be involved in it. A great way to help her make it more hers and for you both to bond on your choices.

Re: the delay in processing. I figured it was just because it cost more (to be more efficient) so that means it takes them 6 months instead of 3 to move that pile of paperwork from one office to the one next door. It IS government after all...  :D

That is why the decorations were going in the closet.  I do not have that Gene I am afraid.  I told her the office is mine, the rest is all the Museum of Ukraine for all I care, just let me have input if I like something or not.

Five suggestions:

-  Remove any evidence of any women in your life.

-  Throw away anything old and worn out (excepting antiques and items of sentimental value).

-  Have new linens waiting to be opened when she arrives.

-  Research what is required for her to get her driver's license.

-  Also, research all options for occupying her time until she gets her driver's license.

Is leaving the house to less than FSU standards a viable option for occupying time?

When my wife got here years ago, I had gone to WalMart and for $79. I had a brand new ladies bicycle (with basket) waiting for her! She loved it. She would go shopping on that bicycle and bring back home all kinds of stuff !!

About a week after she arrived and adjusted to E.S.T.(USA), I took
her to the local High School Parking lot and she started driving. It was on a weekend, of course. She really had a blast. You have to start them immediately, to build up their confidence. It was about 6 month's later and my wife had her driver's license. So, I bought her a used car to start driving (Chevy Cavalier 2001).

Almost 4 years later she has a very good job, her own car (2008) Honda Civic. I kind of helped her with getting her first job, but she has done the rest. She has her own credit cards (very important to establish credit immediately) and she purchased the Honda using her own credit history.

I got bikes as the first weekend they are here.  I promised it to her son for his birthday which is in June.  We got a lot of paved bike trails where I live and being active is important to all of us.

The driving lessons are also top priority and we will report later how that goes.  She does not want to learn in Ukraine, and really I do not know where she would have the time at this point.  She manages to be one of the few people I know with having more going on than most people think possible.

So if she really wanted it, she would find a way.  I got researching all that on my list of things to do before they got here.  I am just trying to get as much done now, so I am not going 5,000 MPH right before they get here.

I just scrapped hunting and fishing, something had to go and I was just not having fun because I was too tired.  The time zone difference and having to get up real early before work to talk was catching up with me.

I had to sift through a daily porchload of discards after work for weeks.

Throw away anything old and worn out (excepting antiques and items of sentimental value).

Especially antiques. On the porch I found a 19th century English telescope mixed in with the junk.
Daguerrotypes, trivets  ....  anything that appeared old and worn was trash to her. We had a sit down,
and straightened this misunderstanding out immediately. Still, our home was about 500 lbs. lighter after
her "homecoming"....  and to be honest, I'm far better off without all the stuff and my own delusional
"future purpose" assigned to each.

Is leaving the house to less than FSU standards a viable option for occupying time?

It's a dangerous option. Believe me when I say my wife nearly fell over with disbelief at the
condition in which I had lived alone for the past 7 years.... she failed to unpack her own bags
for 3 days, with my stepdaughter, then 13, pleading with her to give VAW-gun a chance. It was humbling.

No, no, at the very least get the place uncluttered and relatively clean. And save the
decorating for her.

Like GoodOlBoy, we drove in school lots - where she first solo'd. Bought a few Russian versions of
novels like Great Expectations, The Thorn Birds, and others. This helped pass some of the time, too,
as then-INS dragged its heels on AOS.

Counting my Blessings:

When we go to the states for a visit next week, my wife is planning on increasing her behind the wheel time by about 1000%.  Fortunately my parents live next door to Bellview Baptist Church in Memphis, TN which has a parking lot with approximately 6,000 spaces. My oldest son learned to drive there so she can too.

Hmmmm, I guess I should look into info on getting an International Driver''s License.

Better check with your insurance company about this, mine would NOT accept my wife's INTERNATIONAL drivers license with my policy.

She had to get her FL license.
