There are two ways to spell Russian words and phrases in English.
Olga did transliteration, which is transcribing words into a different language mapping letter by letter from one system into another: Vokzal Dlya Dvoikh. Transliteration is exact so with enough knowledge a reader can reconstruct the original spelling.
Another way is transcription, which maps the sounds of the letters and the way it is pronounced; in this case an example is Vakzal Dlya Dvaikh.

Correct, Tamara :clapping:.

It's not a Russian movie, but I am curious to hear your opinions on it as it takes place in Russia. What do you guys think about "Transsiberian"? And, by the way, just watched "Wanted" with Angelina Jolie to see Russian actor in the beginning. My husband had to pause as I could not believe my eyes.  "What would Konstantin Habensky do in this movie?" As it turns out later, the director was Russian: Timur Bekmambetov.  ;)  So for all of those who loved Night Watch, here is an American movie to see.  :brightidea:

I just finished watching the complete series of Brigade that Svetlana burnt on DVD for me. Not a movie, but rather a TV Series about 3 boyhood friends who ended up becoming Mafia Kingpins in Moscow during the 90s. I found it quite intriguing. It is a supposedly a fairly accurate depiction of those crazy times? Apparently it was a Huge hit when it originally broadcast. Have you watched Brigade Tamara?

Hello Utrobina.

So, in the last scene, when he tricks his wife at SVO to get her and their son on the plane to America, what do you think happened to him?

I swear at the end, when the screen goes dark, I hear a gunshot?

What do you think?

Cool you saw The Brigade GOB! Geeze, I never even heard that gunshot at the end?? Then again it was 5:30am in the morning when I watched the very last Episode this morning! I'll have to go back and listen :) Did you enjoy the Series? Sveta was so proud of herself that she found it at the local Video store and burnt me all the episodes! She even sent me a download of the theme for my cell :)
Apparently it was the most popular ringtone in Russia at the time.

The Thief (1997)
July 17, 1998
FILM REVIEW; Stealing Love and Loyalty, Among Some Other Things
By JANET MASLIN
Published: July 17, 1998

The first thing the handsome stranger steals in the Russian film ''The Thief'' is the devotion of Katya (Yekaterina Rednikova), a dewily beautiful young mother. The year is 1952. Katya and her 6-year-old son, Sanya (Misha Philipchuk) are traveling by train when they meet a flirtatious army officer named Tolyan (Vladimir Mashkov), who turns out to be a dangerous fraud. Except for the charm, nothing about Tolyan is what it seems.

Has anybody ever seen The Red Tent? A joint Italian-Russian effort, it boasts international stars like
Sean Connery, Peter Finch, Claudia Cardinale and Hardy Kruger. Fantastic editing with scenery to match.

I've only watched the 121 minute version, but Красная палатка (Soviet Union: Russian title) is a
full 158 minutes - and so I seek the original Russian version, to savor missed moments of a film that has
long haunted me with its energy, beauty and substance.

A wordy but excellent review by another Red Tent freak is found within this link:

I did but IIRC there isn't much "Russian Soul" in it, it's the story of General Nobile's last expedition to the North Pole in 1928, his dirigible Italia crashing on the pack and the crew surviving for weeks in a makeshift red tent until eventually rescued by the Soviet icebreaker Krassin. Fine movie though, with Morricone's music in the soundtrack ;).

Have you watched Brigade Tamara?

I certainly have!  I go to Russia about 3 times a year and stock up on all the movies that seem to be worth watching.  ;)  Great series and perfect timing.  Same as Brother 1 & 2.  Both were more than just movies, rather social state of mind.

Well, and now I'm going downstairs to watch the relatively new Movie THE ADMIRAL, released in Russian theatres last October 08'. English Subtitles included! It was produced by the same group from Nightwatch and Daywatch :) Oh I love Russian Piracy! lol!!

The ADMIRAL should be added to the list.  I watched it some time ago with my friends.  It is very emotional, but a lot of debates around it as well.  When you finish watching the movie, please share what you think. What impression did this movie have on you?

Olga, thank you for youtube links.  Even though I watched the Thief, it was a long time ago so I enjoyed going back to see a couple episodes.

Has anybody ever seen The Red Tent?

First time I hear about the movie.  SANDRO, thank you for your feedback.  Sounds like a decent movie to watch.

Tamara,

I see no mention of the movie "Love & Pidgeons" (not sure how to write in in Russian). what are your thoughts regarding this movie?

also just bought "Autumn Marathon" because it is one of my friends favorites, and was a little surprised that she enjoyed it due to the typical "Russian Love Triangle". so we had many hours discussing this movie and why she enjoyed it.

Tamara, you are welcome. What so interesting when you watch a good movie for second and even third time you always dustcover something new and it is always interesting to watch them after some time again, same thing with good book  :)

Do you remember the Russian film "A Driver for Vera"? Wonderful film.

He's a pretty good little actor. A guy you can't help but hate!!

I did indeed watch The Admiral last night and I enjoyed it very much :) A bit of a strange twist with the love story angle. I came away thinking that there was too much focus on a love story.... that wasn't really all that much to focus on? A bit of a distraction? Well, maybe that's just my 'male' side coming out! It really did seem to try and make the White Russian Army look so very Cool and as the 'Good Guys' trying to 'save' Russia from the nasty Bolshevik's. You couldn't but help feel sympathetic for the Imperialists as they rode by train to Irkutsk, or when Kappel's soldiers ran out of bullets. They really had nowhere to go after the Czechs and the French General betrayed them. I really wanted to slap that Bolshevik executioner as he was leading Admiral Alexander Kolchak from his jail cell! Well, whether it was historically 100% true or not, It was certainly different seeing Admiral Kolchak and his men looking like the hero's rather than the villain's as they were during Soviet era films! Did you notice how the Reds actors were made to look so ugly and rough compared to the Whites who were so handsome and proper? Propaganda?? ;) I loved the cinematography and suspense at the beginning when Kolchak led the German ship into the mindfield!! You know the end of the movie reminded me a bit of the Titanic? When the elder Anna Timireva was at the Soviet film studio in the 60's?
Yep, I really liked the film a lot!
Dave.

Yes, IMO a very good actor.

In Brigade he plays a real "weasel" type character.

It depends on a DVD player.
