Trip to Jamaica
« on: April 26, 2009, 12:27:16 PM »
My wife and I are planning to spend a week in Jamaica in May, and I'm about to book airline tix. Should the name on her ticket match the name on her Russian passport or can we use our married name?

My wife has a 2-year GC and when she visits Moscow the name on her ticket must match her passport, so she travels on her maiden name. I suspect this is the same situation but would love some clarification from any of you married guys who've done this before your wife received her blue passport.

Airline Tickets.....Passport name.

GOB

BTW Groovlstk....Even when she gets her "BLUE" passport from the GoodOl' USA , when she goes home to Russia she will still use the name in her Russian Passport for the rest of her life to purchase her airline tickets (unless she wants to purchase an American "tourist" visa from the Russian Consulate to go home!!....joking.)

GOB is 100% correct.
Me and my wife has traveled often since marriage. Always have to use name on passport.
We are going to Punta Cana in June. I order tickets 2 weeks ago. Still had to use her maiden name until she has USA passport.
Like GOB said. Will need to use her maiden name visiting home (using russian passport) unless she gets a visa to visit home with USA passport.

Thanks, guys.

It's ironic that I can get good info here but not from the airlines themselves - when I phoned Delta yesterday no one knew what I was talking about.

We're headed to the Grand Lido Negril for a week in May, can't wait to have some R&R.

My wife just renewed her international passport, for an extra $25 they stamped it, which listed her married name.

Again proving how esoteric we are.

Been there a couple of times.  Be sure to take some excursions.  Walking the YS Waterfalls in the mountains is a good trip.  Not sure about the water flow at this time of year.  Interesting to meet the peopl - not the higglers selling stuff on Negril, but the little beach towns.  Happy, happy people without a pot to pee in.

Interesting bar at the south end of Negril where the beach ends and the rocks start.  That was years ago.  I would suggest another place on the south side, owned by an American, however, I heard he was murdered.  Be cool!

You may not believe it based on the number of sellers - ganja is illegal.  Use some care.  However, I understand mushrooms are legal but not so readily available.  Nevertheless, mushroom teas lose their potency rapidly so the experience may be nothing.  Hint - a needle to inflate a basketball could come in handy.

If you want to avoid the crowds and if you are a fan of Bob Marley, he had a beach home on the south side about two hours east of Negril.  We found it and a local sneaked us onto the property but not into the house.  Treacherous swim off the rocks.   Also, a fresh water pool in a cave next to the public road.  You will need a guide for the pool even though it is in front of you (impossible to climb out and so easy to climb in).  Nothing spectacular, the experienced heightened by the fact that it was secluded, not public and where Bob hung out and maybe composed a song.

I saw on television over the weekend the highest murder rate in the world per capita is Kingston, Jamaica. I had no idea. Territorial gangs.

Hey Gator...Are you talking about this place?

http://www.rockhousehotel.com/hotel/

Marina and I went to visit there from our hotel when we went to Negril. A VERY cool place.

Marina and I have also been to Jamaica 3 times (Ocho Rios, Negril and Kingston).

Saw Marley's' place also.

All 3 times to Jamaica were great.

Each side of the island has it's own special ambiance.

In October Kingston has a HUGE festival that lasts for almost a week.

ALOT of partying!! It was great.

Enjoy yourself Groovlstk!!

unless she gets a visa to visit home with USA passport.
That is incorrect. Russian laws state that russian citizens are unable to receive russian visa, no matter which passport they apply with, they are obligated to use russian passport to enter Russia.

Sorry Aloe, But...I have to "enlighten" you to the GoodOl' USA rules.  :D

I know for a FACT of one Russian lady here who had not been home to Russia for 10 years, BUT...Was a US citizen (with Blue passport) for 5 years.

She and her husband travelled abroad quite a bit (2-3 times a year) using her American passport.

She decided to go home to Russia to see her sick Mom in Moscow.

Her Russian International passport had expired, long ago.

She told me this was a BIG problem.

She applied for her Invitation Letter and Tourist Visa, using the same company that I used (TRAVISA) and they got her a Tourist Visa through the consulate in SF. She used all of her "American" information, Husband's last name, Her Social Security Number, Her American passport, everything!!

She went home to the "MOTHERLAND" with an American Tourist Visa.

I am not joking, I saw the Tourist Visa in her GoodOl' USA passport with my own 2 eyes.

This happened about 4 years ago, when my Marina first arrived here.

The lady told me that while she was home she would get her old Russian passport renewed.

I am not absolutely positive, BUT...I believe BOTH of her passports (Domestic and International) were expired.

I have since moved from that area, so I don't know if she ever did get them renewed or just continued her travels as an American. :D

Go to Rick's cafe. Watch the cliff divers. It you have too much rum, you might be enticed to jump. Go ahead from the lower landing. I did. Still alive. Dunn's river falls is nice as is rafting down the Martha Bray river. But I would feel safer in Moscow or Kiev than in Negril or Orcho Rios. And DO NOT go into the mountains for a drive alone.

Isn't this confusing?
Wife has to re-enter the USA on her Green Card/marriage license does she not?
Doesn't a ticket need to match that?

My wife is Ukrainian.
I suppose there is a difference?
She cannot have or at least use multiple passports to travel.

No Sir.....Nothing Confusing....Ticket ALWAYS matches the Passport being used.

One day your wife will be faced with a decision,IF.......She becomes an American citizen.

The Ukraine, right now, does not accept duel citizenships.

She will eventually have to make a VERY important decision....declare herself as an American (hopefully she doesn't own any property in the Ukraine....BIG problem!!)....or NOT become an American citizen and just use her 10 year green card to come back into the GoodOl' USA......or get her "blue" passport and DON'T use it in the Ukraine (sneak around the Ukrainian laws).

I just had a Ukrainian neighbor go through this.

She got "caught" leaving the Ukraine (as an American citizen).

They told her NOT to come back to the Ukraine until she declares herself "American" and files the necessary paperwork in the Ukraine.

I don't know why, BUT....She made the mistake of booking her tickets using her American Passport (Blue)....BIG mistake.

She is not a "happy camper" right now.

Tell your wife to be VERY careful what she decides to do.

You can have 2 passports (Blue and whatever), just don't screw up when you book your tickets!!

I have traveled a lot and can tell you for sure that any international airline tickets have to match the name in the passport, whether it is American or Russian, Ukrainian passport.  If your wife has her Green Card, she needs to carry her passport, Green Card and her marriage license any time she flies internationally. Her marriage license will show both her maiden name and her present last name.

Hi GOB and Tamara..
I assure everyone that the 'confusion' is all mine.
However, allow me to elaborate.
Svetlana and I were married in 2000 here in Texas.
She flew back to Odessa in the summers of 2001 & 02 on her initial green card.
She went in 03 and 04 on her permanent one [restrictions removed].
Each time, I ordered her tickets using our married name.
There was never a problem...she had all the mentioned documents.
In Jan of '05 her son [previous marriage] and his wife moved from Odessa to NYC.
Svetlana has not returned to Ukraine since.
One might say she was lucky with tickets using her married name...but four times?
Dan married a Ukrainian so I will have him glance at this post and see what gives.

Both Svetlana and her son own property in Odessa [currently rented out]
but as GOB pointed out, and I remind her even today...she needs to decide...
lest her passport expire next April.
I would presume that if she renews her Ukrainian passport, she will be able to change it from her previous, to her current married name anyway.
That should eliminate any possible further confusion.
Thanks.....Karl
