Russians are not necessarily any better. My wife is now in Russia and whenever she meets acquaintances, she was telling me that when they find out she is not living in Canada, for some reason, they invariably launch into diatribes about how bad the United States is and how bad their schools are compared to Russian schools are, and how much trouble the United States causes in the world. She was telling me that she has to bite her tongue to avoid saying anything that would insult them.

Yes, but my wife now lives in CANADA  Reminds me of my wife's uncle when I met him. After learning that I was from Canada, he then started going on and on about how the United States ("we") had caused the collapse of the Soviet Union and had brought Russia to its knees LOL! Given the "quality" of Russian education, you would think they would know their geography a bit better. We are two separates states after all and we don't have any real influence on American policy. Russians are in many ways as ethnocentric as Americans.

However, it is now my wife complaining to me about life in Russia. She can't stand the lines, the glum people, the crazy drivers, the rude people serving clients...

Simple things like making a joke about a lady's city or country might be enough for her to reject you without you even knowing it. Understanding her culture and her country's history will almost certainly endear you to the lady as well.
