Hi Kuna ----

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will definately try to implement some of them on my forthcoming trip. ( T minus 9 days and counting). I spoke to Tatianna this morning and suggested a gathering of her family and friends for an engagement celebration meal and get together.
I know that we will be going to her sisters house and that her daughter will also be there. We will be making the rounds to see her other friends individually, as it will be difficult to schedule one large gathering due to work schedules, etc...

Tatianna's parents are both deceased. This leaves only her daughter and sister as surviving immediate family.

The reason I decided to fly into Kiev this trip was because the air fare was so much cheaper as opposed to flying into Kiev and then taking the flight to Dneptroptvosk. The difference allowed me to book two nights at a four star hotel. I want her to experience a bit of pampering on this special occasion.

Tatianna also wants to locate the site of the Consulate so she will know exactly where she has to go when the the time for her interview arrives. I have received some excellent suggestions of things to do and see while in Kiev from RWD members and intend to implement some of those suggestions

We will be taking the overnight train back to Dneptroptvosk on Sunday. Tatianna is renting us an apartment for the week in Dneptroptvosk where the majority of our time will be spent for this trip.

Tatianna told me that for this trip I am to leave my shorts at home  :(  She stated that I could however wear them if we take a journey to the sea. I suppose it is like --"When in Rome do as the Romans."  I will have to head out to the Reading Outlets next week to supplement the dress pants wardrobe prior to travel.

I am still trying to decide how to bring her ring into her country. Should I just pack it with my belongings in my carry on? Or should I just wear it on my pinky finger until I arrive in country.

Kuna ---  I think there is one thing we can both definately agree upon --- and that is that Dnepper girls rule!!!!

Hello Smilingjake.

There is one other "option" for smuggling your ring into the Ukraine!!

I have mentioned it before on this forum.

1. Get a good quality condom.

2. Place ring inside condom, press out all air and tie a knot at the opening.

3. Get a tube of KY Jelly.

4. Before your plane lands in Kiev, go to the bathroom, apply KY Jelly liberally and insert.  :o

5. I can promise you, they will NEVER look there.

Good Luck!

About bringing the ring through Kiev airport. First thing do not let the ring leave your sight.  Packing it in checked luggage is a no no.

If you have a computer bag your bringing, keep the ring in its box there.  When you get near the Kiev airport, put the ring on your pinky finger if it fits or put it in your pocket.  Remember in Kiev you just have to put your baggage through the scanners and there not really looking.  There is no scanning of the person unless they pull you aside -this is rare.

Once you get your luggage off the belt do not be the first to go through the immigration checkers.  Let a couple of people go first and have them get stopped first.  Than you can easily walk by.

If you do get caught, pay the duty but lie about the value of ring.  They have no idea the difference between a 30,000 usd ring and a 3,000 usd ring.  If you do pay the duty, get a detailed receipt of paying it.  When your future wife leaves Ukraine you can get your money back. Or at least try.  Some men I know succeed others do not but if the document is well written you will get your money back when you file the return.  If you say your ring is only 2,000 usd and it has a diamond you will be in trouble.  I would tell them your ring is 3,000 usd unless no diamond.

I have met people who did get caught with ring and maybe they looked like a foreigner with a ring.  Maybe cut your hair short, get some fancy Italian black shoes, some designer jeans, black leather jacket, and some mafia rims.   :D

I would think the Hotel Dnipper would be a good choice or perhaps in the park by the Friendship Arch.  Maybe even in sight of the Lavra Monestary.
