Yes, of course.  It would not be realistic to believe one could learn a new language as well as different and new speech patterns in a short amount of time.  However, "proficient" was not necessarily my goal, but more of a basic understanding.  And with the 4 "D's" (Drive, Determination, Desire, Dedication) as allies, I do not believe this to be an unsurmountable task.

Lost me with the "SW"??  ::)  but good and valid point regarding classes and instructor.

Yes, a pequenos bit of Spanish.  Uh, no not Spanish - Tex-Mex I guess would be a more proper description of the language.

Ahhh, did not know this was the case, YANK THOU MERRY VUCH!  ;)    A few of the letters I have received did not appear they had a translator - possibly they felt one unnecessary.

Would you happen to know if Brides.ru offers translation service for even those that have "free" email addresses?

So, you tried Rosetta Stone?  Did you take the online course or purchase the CD/DVD-Rom package?

Thx y'all!!

Honestly, is this a bit premature?  You've not traveled to any of the FSU countries....  Worrying about paying for translated emails when you don't have anyone you are involved with is putting the horse in front of the cart.

Are you serious about marrying outside your own culture?  Are you serious about potentially marrying a woman from the FSU?  Then get off your duff, schedule a vacation and GO.

Pick a city, rent a flat, go to a couple of the LOCAL dating agencies and MEET some people.  Go with your eyes open, think with the big brain...IF AND WHEN you meet someone you want to get to know better THEN is the time you deal with the logistics of translation of email.

General rules... if a girl is emailing you every day.... its probably a scam.  Most of the dating agencies are in the nicest area's of the city... WHERE YOU THE TOURIST will be staying.  99.9% of the girls you meet cant even begin to dream of living in that area of town.  Most of the girls you meet work very, very long hours and DON'T HAVE the time or the money to go to do email every day.

Chances are pretty good that you are going to have to pay for her letters to be translated into English.   The best advice I got early in this process is to FOCUS on things that CAN NOT BE CHANGED.  She doesn't speak a lick of English? So what, she can learn.  She isn't a blond? So what she can change the color of her hair if she wants too...

Things that wont change...her attitude.   How does she treat service people?  Is she nice to her waitress, the clerk at the check out counter?

My wife and I "spoke" through  an english-russian and russian-english phrase book on my first trip to Odessa.  Her english was so basic that all she knew to say was hello, good bye and thank you.

If you have the right person and they have true feelings for you, they make a way to make it work.  Same with you.  If you have real true feelings for her you find a way to make it work.

Worrying about pay for translation at this point is absurd.  GO and discover if you are WILLING and ABLE to pull this off.  Do you have the financial ability?  DO you have the patience?  Have you found someone?  NONE Of these questions can be answered until you actually START the journey

Rob,

You certainly have an interesting perspective on "things".
