Ukraine: NATO servicemen have brought contraceptives and pregnancy tests into Crimea

On May 31, NATO military cargos, assigned for Sea Breeze – 2006 maneuvers, and, as a number of local legislators assured, for construction of NATO base in Old Crimea’s military training ground too, continued to be blocked.

Several indirect facts confirm long-term aim of NATO presence in Crimean peninsular. For example, no contraceptives are necessary during short-term maneuvers. Staying in the territory of the port of Feodosia, Ukrainian Presidential Envoy in Crimea Gennady Moskal said on air of Inter TV-Channel, as well as for other mass media, that “if the Supreme Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) decides not to conduct the maneuvers, it is the Supreme Rada’s right. In such case, the whole equipment becomes the Ukrainian property.” He added, smiling: “…and contraceptives too.” Feodosia Russian Community Chairwoman Nelli Protasova stated at a news conference in Simferopol that “pregnancy tests” are listed as cargo too (she refused to explain, where she obtained the cargo list from). “It means; they are going to live here for a very long time, using our women,” Protasova stated.

Last night blockade of the Sea Port of Feodosia did not decrease Crimean residents’ activity. On the contrary, anti-NATO action contributed to appearance of local unit of the Crimean Non-Governmental Proryv! (Breakthrough) Youth Organization in Feodosia. In the night, the guys with Proryv arm-bands blocked both port’s exits and Ukrainian panel trucks, aimed at NATO cargos transportation and parked outside of the port territory, building “live shield.” The trucks’ tires were punctured on previous night and drivers swore: “Do not touch our trucks, we will not move from the site!”

Crimean districts began to proclaim themselves as NATO-free zones, following a decision of Feodosia City Court. On May 30, such decision was taken by Leninsky district council. In such way, the MPs supported wish of Crimean residents not to allow carting out of the port and new unloading of NATO military equipment and armament, aimed at Ukrainian-NATO maneuvers. As they state, they are going to block the port of Feodosia until an appropriate decision is taken by the Ukrainian Supreme Rada.

Nelli Protasova may wish she had been more welcoming to NATO when Russian troops roll in and claim Crimea as belonging to Russia!  Which is a strong possiblitiy...
The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.  michelangelo
