Yes, it seems to me that she meant more the 'distance' issue, that she would follow you any where. I am sure she would realize later pretty soon that living in Russia was actually an exile in comparison to a happy organized life in the US or Canada.  Especially with a person she loves.

Mir is essentially right, however one word is not appropriate - the Gulag.
Gulags are a purely Soviet phenomenon.  At 1830x there were no such things as Gulags.

Oh please don't dismantle this myth. Even schoolchildren know that even in USA during short McCarthy reign thousands and thousands of Democratic party members ( with their families ) were sent to various FBI's Gulags across Alaska northern Canada.
