A Russian woman was being held in Paris today after attacking the Mona Lisa with a cup of English Breakfast tea.

The woman threw the ceramic mug full of the steaming brew over the heads of tourists, scoring a direct hit on the most famous work of art in the world in front of stunned security guards at the French capital's Louvre Museum.

In the case of the Leonardo da Vinci's Gioconda, a.k.a. Monna Lisa i.e. Madonna Lisa (Madonna was the Florentine appellation used to address women of status), the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, it was also stolen by a misguided patriotic Italian in 1911 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincenzo_Peruggia) who mistakenly thought it had been stolen by Napoleon, while Leonardo had given it as a gift to King Francis I, after he had moved to France to become a painter in his court.

Leonardo died in the manor house of Clos Lucé, near the king's residence at the royal Chateau Amboise in the Loire valley.

Somehow I knew it wasn't a joke right away, which only makes it that much better.

Maybe they can answer the old question: is this actually art?  Just keep the teacups away till after the experiment....

Mona Lisa has a glass protection in front of it one of the few in that museum.  Takes a long time to go see that painting as the museum it is in is very large.   I remember when I saw it I was a little mad as it was very small and not that exciting.  Maybe the RW was just pissed as it did not meet her expectations.      I liked the big picture of Napoleon near it - very interesting painting but no glass protection.  The eyes on the Mona Lisa move the same as many paintings in that museum.  Just an urban legend that gets people to go see it in person.

LOL, my wife said she probably wants to spend winter in Paris for the relative comfort of the facilities.

I remember when you could stand right in front of the Mona Lisa and lean against the wall examining it from only inches away. Sad, but realistic that it must now be protected from the public.

on russian news site it says that she did it because they refused to give her french citizenship, and that the mug was empty and they let her go
