elliot, may be you could post some links on these comedians so that we could watch them performing?

Lily google for George Carlin. You can watch his performances on youtube.

I've always been a fan of the edgy impression stand-up. Richard Pryor, Robin Williams and Dana Carvey.

Here is a classic Monty Python bit albeit British. I've seen it at least 100 times and laugh harder every time.

My absolute favourites - their surreal humour is both situational and verbal. I've already posted somewhere else a few of their sketches (Dead Parrot, Albatross, etc.). Here's something from their films, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian:

They also improve one's classical education ;D:

Yeah, Monty is good. :)

My absolute favorite of American humor is still the Simpsons, after all these years. :)

Just my own experience, but my wife hates American slapstick comedies

KenC:  "Most Russians I have known love slapstick comedy."

My experience goes along with that of KenC rather than that of groovistk.

Despite the claim of cultural superiority, I found most FSU people to be rather childish when it comes to preferred humor.

Just my own experience, but my wife hates American slapstick comedies and thinks American humor in popular movies and TV, is silly crap. (I tend to agree with her in most cases.)

I understand your wife. I would not say that I hate American slapstick comedies, I'm rather indifferent about that comedies and I don't watch them...

Funny enough, she loves Curb Your Enthusiasm and even thinks Larry David, of all people, is sexy  :P

That is one of my favorite shows and I agree with your wife regarding Larry David   8)

Can Russians do impersonations?  For instance, there's a lot of comedians who can do George Bush, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Arnold the Governator, John Madden, John Wayne, etc.  Many can also speak with a good accent that is Russian, Scottish, Irish, Australian, Mexican, etc.  Can Russian do that also?  I would be inclined to think that they can't.

Yes they can and do. But of course it is mostly parodies on Russian famous people (politicians and actors...)
