Living in Petrograd
« on: November 16, 2009, 03:13:24 PM »
Since October 1st I have been living with my girlfriend/fiancee what ever you want to call her - titles are not important to me, love is, and her family in the city center of SPb (well a 7 minute walk to the Strelka, or 12 minute walk to Palace Square).  I love it, 5 days a week while she is at work I go to language courses, as I am learning the language the correct way - grammar, spelling, idioms, etc. for 4-5 hours.  Then come home, maybe get some food or do something with my classmates or help my girl's niece with her English homework or something.

On the weekends I do normal everyday stuff, go shopping, maybe go to some interesting part of the city, visit her babushka, whatever.  It is great not being a tourist.  On days that there is a hockey game I take the 45 minute metro trip wearing my СКА jersey and scarf to the "Ice Palace" and watch my favorite sport being played at a high level and eating corn on the cob and drinking Baltika 7 between periods.

This city is great, if you get a chance to come here and experience life beyond the touristy stuff so it.  I love it here.

Oh and here is a pretty crappy video I made from the SKA-CSKA game a couple weeks ago.

Hi Kunstkammer!

That's great that you are taking advantage of the opportunity to live in Piter. What an amazing city. I was there for a couple weeks in October and fell in love with it. I am already feeling nostalgia and I've only been home for 3 weeks! Anyway, my girlfriend currently lives in Novosibirsk but is planning on moving to SPb in early summer. I will definitely be racking up more frequent flyer milleage with frequent visits.

I read in another thread that you and your fiance hope to reside in Russia. Just curious, do you have business prospects there?

My financial/business situation is a bit unique.  I am able to earn my salary while residing anywhere in the world.

I too think Piter is an amazing city. I have been to many cities the world over and I have to say I enjoyed it the most and literally fell in love with the place. I don't ever expect to live in Russia but I was wondering, how long have you lived there and how do you deal with the visa restrictions?

And the field of activity...?
It's your problem if you take my posts too seriously.

Love the city, its a blast during the White Nights!  8) One of my favorite areas is outside the city, Peterhof.

I loved every minute of my time in Petersburg and were it not for the constant hassle of visas I would very likely be living there still.

Don't worry too much about the winter.  It's not really the cold that is a problem.  It's the darkness.

You knew that the White Nights came with a price, right?  Yes they do.  Come late December six hours of overcast, dreary daylight is about the average.

Still, there is nothing like viewing the city after a fresh snowfall, it was always my favorite time of year.

Phil dAmore, We have the same problem with the loss of daylight in Alaska during the winter.  :(   The New Years  celebration in SP is a great party.

I grew up in Wasilla, Alaska the climate is exactly the same.

As I said in my OP since October 1st, but I worked a deal for a student visa, as long as I am in this language school, I'm good.
