Green card , Mexico and other countries
« on: November 21, 2009, 09:05:39 AM »
My wife , Larisa , is getting  her GC  very soon and we want to travel to Mexico as well as other countries later .
She does have her AP for travel  but I read that the GC trumps that .
Having the green card means she , as a Russian doesn't have to  get a visa for Mexico  .
AS you all know , Russians need a visa to travel to Mexico , but having a GC changes this ??

What has been your experience with traveling  and green cards and Russian wives ??

I read that Mexico issues tourist visas upon entry to Permanent Residents of the US.  Your wife will be in the Conditional Permanent Resident status, and I don't know if the 'Conditional' aspect is an issue.  I say that because my wife and I traveled extensively over the years of our dating, and Mexico was the most difficult country for her to obtain a tourist visa.  Italy, Spain, Cyprus, etc. were a breeze, but not Mexico.  2012isnotFiction's girlfriend tried to get a tourist visa to Mexico and was denied.

We are going to The Bahamas in December.  My wife is RW, and Russians do not require a Tourist Visa.  If she were UW, the following would apply:

Permanent Residents of the United States and Canada do not require a visa to travel to The Bahamas. However, Please Note the following:

-  Permanent Residents of the United States are required to have an Alien Registration Card (Green Card) with a valid passport from the country of origin.

-  Permanent Residents of Canada are required to have proof of Landed Immigrant status (Immigration 1000 form).

There are a number of countries that do not require tourist visas for Russian citizens.  The following link is as good as any for determining visa requirements:

I can't speak of traveling with my wife having an American Green Card, but I can address the issue of traveling with my wife who had Canadian Permanent Residence. A woman with a Russian passport and a Canadian permanent residence card does not need a visa to travel to Mexico. My wife spent a week at a Mexican resort last year without any problems.

For travel, Condition Resident Alien Card = permanent Resident Alien Card.  No difference.

Resident Alien status trumps Advanced Parole.  The AP is no longer needed, or of any use.

For visa info, the best one-stop shop is this age of the Delta Airlines web site.  Put your wife's country in, then resident alien of the USA, and the country you wish to travel. -- http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/plan_flight/international_travel_information/visa_passport_information/

"Green Card" is slang for an United States Resident Alien Card.

When dealing with legal documents issued by the US Government, it is always best to use their correct names, so there will not be any confusion.

By the way, a "Green Card" hasn't been green for quite a few years.

My (now ex )wife and i traveled to mexico last year..
She has a GC (has held for many years)and that was what she would be traveling on.

I can say i expected them to check it..
but at the airport in mexico they only looked at her US drivers license.
both on arrival and when departing.

They did check her GC at the US airport  on our return.

I would continue to research it before your travel , as the requirements change quickly.
but i cant imagine you would  have any problems if she has a US drivers license and as temp or permanent resident card (GC)
.
