Extending visa?
« on: December 10, 2009, 11:18:24 AM »
Hi All,

I'm not posting this in the Immigration/visa forum as it seems that forum
is designed for RW wanting to leave Russia.

I am in Russia now for a one week visit.
My visa expires in less than a week.
Is it possible to extend it while I'm here?

It sure would be a heck of a lot cheaper to stay longer now than to fly
back to Canada and return soon again.

TIA

From my understanding of Russia's visa law and requirements (which is limited), you are SOL. I suppose you could apply for an extension but I wouldn't hold out any hope of it being granted. All the visa service companies highly recommend applying for a visa earlier than arrival and later than departure for this very reason. Maybe they know something the rest of us don't.

However, I would contact a visa service company to see if it is possible and if it is, let them do it for you.

Thanks. A company inside Russia or outside?

I was able to do so at OVIR, however this was quite a few years ago

I was actually overstaying while the request was processed, and got done the day before I departed..

But this was back in the old days where a visa was sometimes in the form of a slip of paper and not in the passport itself..

I kind of doubt it is easily possible today, but guess people do break legs, get sick etc and can't travel so there likely is some method.

Travisa, I think is both an inside and outside company. http://www.travisa.com/ Like BC I would think there are extenuating circumstances where you could be granted an extension but I'd also say it doesn't look good. It would be interesting to hear how it works out for you.

Travisa is one of the service companies approved by the russian consulate to handle visa business. If they can't help I don't know who could

Good Luck
