I saw an interesting bit about 7 or 8 years ago.

5 men.  Roughly in height ---
5'4"
5'6"
5'9"
6'0"
6'4"

I would say fairly similar in looks, but I am not a good judge.
Behind a one way mirror, they brought in different groups of single ladies.
They completely fabricated the men's backgrounds (family, work, financial status, etc.).

The women almost universally chose the tallest two men -- regardless of the height of the women.
In fact, even when they made the shortest gentleman a multi-millionaire venture capitalist, the women chose the 6'4" gentleman -- who they were told was an unemployed construction worker.

Yep, this is mostly instinctual. Women, in general, will be attracted to taller men.  We did a similar one way mirror study many years ago when I was a fledgling psychology student.  The result mirrors the above.  The taller men were chosen the most (over 90%).

And oddly enough, the  other side of the study, the men almost always chose the women with the largest breasts.

I'm a steady 172 cm... I can't really complain about my dating life in general.  I tend to have great luck with women I meet in person by chance, but not as much with women on US based dating sites where my height is clearly listed (response rate is not nearly as much as in person).. once I changed my height just to see what would happen.. and amazingly enough, my response rate suddenly soared through the roof.... so, by first glance, it would appear that I am being rejected out of hand based solely on my height.

I'm sure that's probably true on the FSU dating sites as well.

Overall, I certainly can't complain as I have had more than my share of opportunities... but what I do find absolutely hilarious is when women brush off a man because he's "vertically challenged", but the same women complain about the "shallowness" of men who like slender women with big breasts.

The trick Daveman (so I'm told ;)) is to add 10 (cm) to your height and take 10 (yrs) off your age and 10 (kg) off your weight. It has a similar effect to responses as a 'power up' does in Marioworld.

Take heart shorties, at 193 cm, (6'4"), some ladies find me too tall and indeed a lady < 160cm (5'2") is out of my peripheral vision when standing next to me.  I must be careful when walking astride a lady like this lest I turn abruptly and squash her like a bug.  But in high school through university I was always too skinny also and thus was often passed over in the mating dance in those days.  Amazing for me to observe the more well proportioned scoundrels get the girl; another proof that, most often, it is the voice of the animal that rules mate selection.  But every dog has it's day and post-college I filled out to become normal while others turned chubby and then did I hear the ladies burble, amazing me once again.

I find a saddle more often than not appears to have a somewhat cumbersome fit on the very diminutive types.  ::)

Lot's of feel good theories here  :P

Now I am really confused because at 5' 9" (if I pay close attention to proper posture a bit more) none of the women I've been with ever told me this. Including my wife who's literally 6' tall and she's not the tallest I've been with (6' 2" - semi-pro beach volleyball player). There're a whole lot of women disliking me in my lifetime then, eh?

You folks mean I could've lost my virginity far more earlier than I did had I been tall?

The best dates in my life, except from my husband, was with a guy of 170 cm. He was a gymnast, extremely athletic and agile. Very attractive. There is something very attractive about people who do gymnastics and the like, their way of moving around is so different, you can just see it in their every move :)

Below is a link to an article that talks about this subject, it stresses the evolutionary aspect, but mentions other factors.

eharmony is not a great source for men on RWD where eharmony method is find a mate before you see a photo.  I liked match.com a lot better where you see the photo and easy to get any girl you want day 1 rather than going through the eharmony process.

Height is an advantage but many other factors are important as well.  Its another debate like VO or VM - no real answer.

Bernie Ecclestone at just over 5' 2" never seems to do too bad with 'da ladies'. I guess $$$$'s speak louder than """"'s, surprise surprise.

It's a little off topic related to this thread, but I will agree that most men looking in the FSU started because of the visual aspect (I would not deny I'm one of them).  But, when I was on eharmony I would often get bored with the local matches sent to me so I would open up my geographic area to the entire world and I was surprised that more than a few RW showed up in my inbox (needless, they did not pass the visual test).

Vinnvinny,

Maybe when the good lord was allocating inches, Mr. Ecclestone received them in another location and he's really not as short as we think.   :o

Granted, I think your first suggestion is probably more accurate.

You could be right wicheese. Or maybe he has more top end power than us lessor mortals and as we know, the ladies will just lap that up as they race towards the finish line. ;D

Pablo Picasso song

Quote
Well some people try to pick up girls
And get called a$$holes
This never happened to Pablo Picasso
He could walk down your street
And girls could not resist his stare and
So Pablo Picasso was never called an a$$hole

Well the girls would turn the color
Of the avacado when he would drive
Down their street in his El Dorado
He could walk down you street
And girls could not resist his stare
Pablo Picasso never got called an a$$hole
Not like you
Alright

Well he was only 5'3"
But girls could not resist his stare
Pablo Picasso never got called an a$$hole
Not in New York

Oh well be not schmuck, be not abnoxious,
Be not bellbottom bummer or a$$hole
Remember the story of Pablo Picasso
He could walk down your street
And girls could not resist his stare
Pablo Picasso was never called an a$$hole
Alright this is it

Some people try to pick up girls
And they get called an a$$hole
This never happened to Pablo Picasso
He could walk down your street
And girls could not resist his stare and so
Pablo Picasso was never called...

Very true Lily. I think his $3 billion has helped to make him look 'da taller'. :D

I wonder if it follows that very tall men with $0 don't seem so 'da lofty'? :-\

I do not know if I was a short woman i would not like a tall tall man , a man maybe slightly taller than me -yes, but not like I was 1.56cm for example and he would be 1.86 cm?! What is the attraction? :)))

Well obviously men who are not so tall can also have great luck with women.  I've dated both shorter and taller women than myself.  It's not really a big deal.

What we are speaking about with those studies is instinctual tendencies of first impulses in attraction - which is different than "falling in love" (even in the areas of the brain involved).  Also familiarity changes the rules somewhat. Other traits are then noticed as opposed to the initial "taller man = better genetics for stronger children, better hunter, better protector, better provider" instinctual reaction/attraction.

Then the title of the topic is wrong :) cos if you speak about better genetics then call it so!

Better genetics is not necessarily true (or false) either.  It's all about perceptions (again) and those do not always stem from conscious level thought and neither are they necessarily rational, but based more in the evolutionary process... part of the science involved in unconscious stimulus/response.
