Flying to Kiev
« on: December 20, 2005, 09:35:55 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am flying to Kiev in January--I know it osn't going to be balmy but I  live in Minneapolis so it can't be any worst! Anyway I am not going to  the Ukraine to find a wife (or partner) but just to visit the place and  see the sites. Any advice on where to stay in Kiev would be  appreciated. Also any suggestions on restaurants, bars, museums,  galleries, etc. would be very welcome.

Thanks!

Personnally I like the Rus.  My second choice would be the Dnepro.  You can go to www.hotelsrussia.com and find a good selection at a fair price.  The other hotel I looked at and have never stayed at is the Ukraina.  I have been in their lobby.  It is the most central hotel.

There is a lot to see in Kiev.  Buy a guidebook.  My favorite is the Lavra, but don't miss going down to the lower level on the walkway and seeing the caticombs.  It is cool.

Restaurants. there are a ton of them.  If you miss american food the TGI Fridays is  a good choice.   The little place about 3 doors up from the TGIF is nice for a casual meal and if you are in a japaneese mood across the street and down about 5 doors is a good place.   Don't miss walking through the fruit market there.  It is cool.  There is an Italian place I really liked, two levels and a piano player, great food and decour but I can't think of the name right now.   Anono might have some suggestions.  He almost lives there.  You will find a lot of great restaurants.  They are very food consious there.   If you need a good internet cafe at the end of Krastik st down in the lower level of the underground shopping center near the food court is a good one for a buck an hour.

I will be there myself from the 18th to the 23rd.  If you are going to be there then I would be happy to meet up with you during the day and show you my guide book and make some suggestions.

Thanks for that. I'll be in Kiev on Jan 30th so unfortunately I want be able to take you up on your offer. But I will check out all the places you mention -- I'll keep a discreet distance between myself and TGIF!

An alternative to the hotels are apartments.  Usually these are about 1/2 the price of hotels, just as comfortable without the maid service though.  Of course it's also without security keeping an eye out for you.

By all means find a place that is near a metro station and preferably near Kreshatic (the main st).

As to places to go a good walk is to go down St Andrew's spursk that descends to the podil district.  It starts at St Michaels and winds it's way down with plenty of nicknack and tourist item stalls.  Once you reach the bottom you can either take the metro station by the McDonalds or ride the funicular back up to St. Michaels.

The Arizona is a nice American restuarant in Kiev. I also like the Dnpro (pronounced 'nipper')Hotel because of it's location.

The Arizonia Bar and Grill used to be one of my favorite places, I would go there at least once every trip. But about two years ago mangement changed and the place has really gone down hill.

Across the street from TGIF is a wonder Ukraine cafeteria. I will have breakfast there many mornings.

And as someone else mentioned, flats are usually the way most guys go. I would say over 90% of our clients stay in flats over hotels, half the cost and a whole lot more privacy. And the flats on or near Khershatyk are usually much better location than say the Russ.

It has been quite awhile since I've been to Kiev. The Arizona was a favorite of mine when I went there. Sorry to hear that it isn't that great anymore.

What kind of service do you have Jack? I see that you mentioned clients. Can you give me a little info?

I will let Jack tell you the details of his business Sonar, but since there are are a lot of agencies out there I will comment that his business is well thought of by a lot of people.  There really are some reputable agencies out there and his is one of them.  I am saying this because you asked.  There are other owners come here and they too run good agencies so I am not saying that to be anything bad about anyone else.

I have been so tied up in this stupid argument about the 7 day thing (you know what I mean) that I have had no time to check into other areas of this site. Didn't realize that there were agency owners here also. Thanks for the info.

Maybe I should change my screen name to 'The 7 day guy'.

Kinda' has a nice ring to it.

Don't worry about it Sonar.  Sometimes you have to be a little thick skinned here but most everyone means well.  Photo guy is probably happy cause they all found someone else to pick on.   We all have things we would do differently in retrospect.   I have a feeling if you had it all to do over it would be different.

Thanks for the kind words Turbo. Sorry I'll miss seeing you in Ukr.

Hello Sonar, I did not realize that their was a new whipping boy on the RWD.  In all seriousness guys are giving photoguy their opinions because many of them have been where he is, have experienced where he is at and are really trying to help him. I have been there myself and have my concerns but have written photoguy privately.

What do I do? Well, right now I am in Kiev with 14 guys and they are going to meet 70 bad-ass looking women who are looking for a foreign husband day after tomorrow on the 28th. 14 of these women will probably be escorted to one of Kiev's finest New Years Eve party. Then two days later we will have another party on Jan. 3rd where these guys will meet another 70 fine looking ladies who are seeking marriage to a foreign man.

In addition to three tours a year to Ukraine and Russia we do almost any and everything you might need. Translations, three-way calls, hand delivery of letters, flowers, gifts to ladies in about 28 major cities in Ukraine and Russia, flat rentals, airport-train-bus pick-ups, introductions to many honest and ethical marriage agencies in the FSU, consulting, advising of good and bad Russian discussion boards, you name it we pretty much can do it or find someone who can. We used to sell ladies addresses but most recently we pretty much give them to men who have interest until we can go thru the site and delete several ladies and add several new ones.

It's a little after 2am now and I need to get to bed as we have a busy day tomorrow but send me an e-mail to nunya@ix.netcom.com and I'll be glad to offer you whatever help we can.

I have been to Kiev 6 times, I am here NOW, and apts are the ONLY way to go in my book. there are cheaper than hotels and have all the amenities to boot. Also woman would feel more comfortable coming to your apt than your hotel room. Besides you can wine and or dine her in your own place. I love to cook so when I met my now wife I told her I would cook some american food for her. She did not beleive me until I did the cooking and her and her friends did the eating. Every time we come to Ukraine to visit her mother and friends I always cook a few american dishes for them to try. Everything from apple pie a full course turkey dinner for Christmas last Sunday.

Well my wife is out shopping, but I better go for now.

Jack,

How about posting some photo's from the meeting today when you have a chance? I think a lot of men would like to see what your definition of "70 bad-ass looking women who are looking for a foreign husband(s)" is like?
