I've never thought about that, but it's a very good and true 'point'. Cultural differences can actually bring people together.

I can remember simple language misunderstandings that could have led to a nasty conflict, but when dealt with humorously are just good memories now.

For me cultural diffences aren't something to be overcome, but something to embrace and part of what makes an international relationship interesting. In the long run though, it's individual, not cultural traits that are most important.

I agree. I think more share social differences, the more cultured and educated man, so it is more cosmopolitan and tolerant to other cultures. The most important personal qualities, character.

In both those threads the authors point to cultural differences that would make most Russian women and Western men incompatible or a best make an international relationship difficult. Do you think there is any truth to that?

I have got an impression after reading those writers that they have some mental problems…and maybe depression. So I can not take those opinions seriously. Which woman wants to be next to inharmonious person that hates women in generally and even all nation? Answer: woman that has some problems too..or woman that just wants to use man for her goals..no other variants :evil:   

I am sure that Russian women are the same with women from abroad. Can be some superficial difference for the present moment that depends on economical and demographic situation right now in Russia. In Russia rigth now it is much bigger competition in women society... what a present for visitors But basic human nature is the same absolutely.

But I agree that we have some cultural differences:
For example: Orthodox religion has different spiritual values, maybe you know typical Russian proverbs like: “suffering cleans soul”, “money is evil”, “nothing for myself”…we all grown up with this. Deep inside every Russian has knowledge that he needs to suffer to save his soul. So often rich people have mental problem cause that basic mental program conflicts with dictated by consumers’ society aspirations. IMO
   
But for me cultural difference makes an international relationship more exciting and intersting...some people like to discover new things (even RW like me )

About Russian people don't tell enoufh "sorry" and "thanks"...Hey..it is difference between our languages only! In Russian language we don't need to tell such ammount of these words like in English. Russian language is more emotional. Also we get use more mimicry and body language then English speaking people. When I ask something from people...my question has special thankfull intonation inside...people feel that I am thankful already that moment...then a nod and smile and it is absolutly enoufh for some situations. Make your eyes open and you will see.

I don't think your English comprehension is good enough for you to come to sush diagnosis that the writers of these posts are maybe depressed or hate women in general and their Nation! That is a sterotypical negative answer by a RW who doesn't like comments or critique about their character attributes and prefers to swip most comments under the carpet, but I do respect more "Lily's" views on this board who has more open and honest approach in such matters and for that reason she is so well respected by everybody!

The Russian language has a lot of fluff and what it can be explained with few words in English precisely in Russian you need 100 words to make any sense! As about intonation I don't think the Russian language has any and everything sound the same in my ear and I do speak one or two foreign languages to know the difference!

I see absolutely no contradiction in what she said. And I think perhaps that you're taking what she said the wrong way. Someone such as yourself should know by now that non-native English speakers who don't have an exceptionally strong grasp of the language can often use words or phrases that have stronger (or different) connotations to us than what was actually meant. For example, her saying "mental problems" isn't necessarily strongly suggesting a serious mental illness. It's a generalized term that in English most closely fits what she was trying to say. At least that's my take on it.

Yo hablo mas de idioma tambien, y no comparto su opinion. You are not a native Russian speaker, so I would imagine that you are not necessarily qualified to refute her statement. I think you need to settle down and not take her comments so personally.

This is total justification like BS.  When I ask for something I also use the 'please' word as part of the request.  Then I follow that up with a 'thank you.'  So likewise the Russian 'please equivalent' as part of the request does not invalidate the need for a follow up thank you.  And further, many times there is no asking for something by the FSU people; something is merely done for them.  And in those cases there also is no thank you received so this cannot be explained away by reference to a 'thankful intonation inside the question.'  And there are no smiles or nods either.

Yes, I have noticed much in the way of thank you's from FSU people and even spacibo bolshoya's and smiles and nods . . . but never directed toward WM.  This applies to both FSUW and FSUM.  They take and take and take from Westerners and give nothing in return in the way of thanks.

I acknowledge there are some behavioral reasons why FSU people are reluctant to thank westerners.  I don't understand totally the reasons, but I understand that they do exist.

And before anyone starts with the 'oh you poor dear boy' crap or 'you are just associating with the wrong type of FSU person,' - - - it is just not me.  These discussion threads are filled with the comments of those who have experienced exactly as I have.  True, there are those men who will claim they are the recipients of 'thanks you' from the FSU people, but those men are far outweighed by those who have posted exactly as I have posted regarding this matter.
