Quoting Other People
« on: February 07, 2010, 06:40:39 PM »
I am just wondering why when some people respond, they quote the whole post of the person
that they are responding to. Now, this might seem like a stupid question, but do the people who
grab the entire post and quote it not know that the readers can figure out what's going yhere (southern here).
What's really odd is that some people quote an original post from the thread starter.

Perhaps someone would like to give some lessons on quoting other people. I just grab a portion and
some people grab bits and pieces; But, grabbing the whole post is rather annoying.

Respect maybe?  A partial quote can be seen as a negative if only the negative parts are shown.  It is only pixels and electrons.  Why question it?  I admit, sometimes I quote too much for my reply, but then again I have quoted not enough at other times.

This is a good question... I only know my own reasoning.  But I look forward to hearing other peoples opinion of this.

I can think of several reasons I quote posts:

1. It is a matter of netiquette and the recognition that topics are archived and may be read much later and by people that did not participate in the original topic. By quoting the person I reply to, it makes it clear to whom I was responding - or at least, what it was that prompted my response.

2. In the case of a partial quote (i.e. excerpt), care should be taken to NOT 'soundbite' the original text in a way that would taint the meanings. When a post contains numerous points and I wish to respond, it does seem clearer to excerpt the singular point I want to respond to - and then move on to the next point similarly - and so on.

3. Because some of our members have been known to edit posts (within the allowable window), I try to quote the post I wish to respond to - once again, so that it is clear what prompted my response - even if the OP edits it in the meantime.

I'm thinking about debating here but, I just wanted to make sure my point was clear.

I was trying to quote myself but quoted Seeker instead so I'll quote the Boss.

You know some folks just don't know how to quote. The guy above me, oh wait, that was me, quoted himself inside the owner's post.

One reason people quote the whole post, is because when you click on the quote icon it pastes in the whole post in the quote box. (easiest way to quote).
Quoting the whole post while highlighting the areas you wish to emphasise is the most respectfull way to post IMO.
My apologies to those who find displeasure with the increased workload.

I laugh at when people do partial quotes of what I write.  Partial quotes take away from the meaning of what I wrote.  It gets worse when people break up your quotes and put a couple together.  There are several members here who do this and know that doing this helps their argument rather than keeping entire post.

For example.  If  I wrote I do not know Jack personally who owns a dating tour service in Ukraine but hear he is very good and honest person.  Someone could edit it and say I do not know Jack.  See how the meaning changes.
