Thinking of winging it!
« on: February 08, 2010, 11:45:38 AM »
I have been thinking of just hopping on a plane and going to Ukraine to hang out for a month or so.  I have some people I know telling me that that would be dangerous because I don't speak the language.  Other people say it shouldn't be a problem.  Any thoughts?  Also, where should I go to meet women?  Discos?

Sure.
However, If you are marriage minded...best elsewhere.

Good luck ..

I could be marriage minded with the right woman.  But I think that's probably the case with the women at the discos too.

superbb, have you ever picked up women at clubs or "discos" where you live? If so, how many of them have been marriage material?

I have.  I agree that a lot of them seem a bit worthless as marriage material, but everyone has a heart! ha.  I actually dated a woman for two years that I met at a bar before.  Also, a lot of the russian women looking for marriage on the internet go to discos too.  There is not a lot to do over there, so I'm told.

Wherever you go you will have a big sign on your head with 'Rich foreigner'.
This, certainly in discos, will shy away the marriage material and make you a mark for 'good time girls'.
If you do not speak the language, go to Kiev or the Crimea, tourist traps where you might find enough people speaking English. If you wish to wing it in areas lesser likely to have English speaking people around, get yourself a good wingman that speaks the language.

I should preface with I have never been to Ukraine but, I would not see this as a problem. With some proper planning I think you'd be in for a very good time. There are some members of RWD who sell their services as Guy or Gal Fridays who could help insure that you would. If you are in a position to do so, I would highly recommend it

I would advise you to not go to Ukraine if you want disco action.  Your going to end up in a bad spot hanging out in discos not knowing the language.

Many men on this board when in Ukraine had a woman or agency to guide them around.  If you are an experienced foreign traveller, than you will be ok.

But if your photo in your avatar is really you I see you taking a beatdown and being robbed. You do not come across as a serious foreign traveller.

What does the usual experienced foreign traveler look like?  Old?  I'm confused about why you think that I would get a beat down and robbed just from my profile picture.  Yes, that is me.

For the life of me, go to Discos and have a great time. If you happen to meet someone you like, then act accordingly. Just because a woman went dancing at a disco, or had a drink at a bar - doesn't mean they're damaged goods.

I dated a few women I met in church before and they're wackos as much as I met women at bars and clubs that were nice.

Going to FSU, or anywhere for that matter, I think is pretty darn exciting. Why not? The only thing I would tell you is educate yourself towards the place you plan on going to.

Just noticed - why are you tagged as a Commercial member?

I don't agree with Kievstar either. The FSU can be a wonderful traveling experience especially if you've never been there. Keep in mind though it is different even from Europe. Learn about the place before you go so you will have some idea of what to expect. The evils and rule of law of travel are much the same there as anywhere with different nuances. It's much more difficult to recognize danger when you don't speak the language and the cops/militia can be the worse of the problem instead of the solution. It is highly likely you can go spend a couple of months there and have a wonderful time with no problems. Discos in the FSU more so than other places around the globe do attract some bad actors and element. Approach with caution and stay on your toes, you can have a good time regardless.

I just had a  rum and coke and read this and laughed and I agree with him totally .
You have the look of , " hey everybody  , I am a naive American , take me around back  and rob me ". I mean this in a good way , of course . ;D

If you really do , you should have lots of money and   plenty of English speaking guides  to see you through .
There's almost NO English anywhere and  the language is very difficult.
Really , I don't believe you are serious .  Maybe you could connect with this  message board and  let us know how things are going , once there .

First, you don't come across as looking for a serious, long-term relationship with an FSUW. More like a tourist looking for a good time (no, I'm not saying you're a sex tourist or anything, just a guy looking for fun). That's okay, just not exactly what we focus on here.

Second, if you go to Kyiv and you're comfortable with the club scene you should do fine there. Plenty of folks speak English and with a reasonable amount of caution you should be fine. Stay in center (although it's worth a trip to Shooters) and work Kreshatyk and the area up towards Universitet metro, Tetralna metro and the Operahouse.

Third, you might consider freepersonals.ru and/or mamba if you want to line up some dating prospects before going over there.

I have close friends from Kiev. Hockey players and ex military. They tell me it is no more dangerous than any big city in many parts of the world.
You just need to keep your street smarts about you.

To those who have been to the Ukraine is it more dangerous than the bad areas of New Orleans or a third world country?

Yes , very , because you don't know the language and there's no English anywhere , except maybe menus in  restaurants , I have been there several times, it's a beautiful city  with beautiful women , you should have a plan , not just wing it , that's very irresponsible

Yes, I guess the unknown language if the key here. I have been to very dangerous places but could always communicate or read the language. That does throw a twist in it. Thanks

yes, some guys could just *wing it*..

if the goal was just to go have a good time and maybe meet someone ,
but  the odds of meeting a "wife" would vbe equalt to going to a club
(or park or church group ) in chicago this weekend and meeting a wife
slim!! (but possible)

I wouldn't think it good *general advice*.

if you want helpful and specific advice
it would help  to know  a bit more about you ?

What are you looking for?

What is your  background ?

are you well traveled ?
where?

have you lived in other countries long term?
where?

in general if you've traveled - are you comfortable in generally chatting  up local women there?
if not ,then winging it is not a great plan.

as the likelhood is high that you would  stand out !
but not to russian women that would be just going for a drink and dance with her friends.

the approaches you would get would be from another type, and certainly in the higher profile clubs in the touristy cities where more english is spoken..  kiev, odessa etc..

if you are confident you can sort those out, in an unfamilar  culture ,
and confident in chatting up more of the regular crowd.. ???

.

All things being equal, no it is not as or more dangerous than New Orleans, Atlanta or L.A.. Probably a quite a bit safer. But the unfamiliarity coupled with not knowing the language leaves a tourist more vulnerable to attack. Just as a drunk Frenchman with a pocket full of money might find himself alone in Birmingham, Alabama. Its the ingredient of a target for those with nefarious intentions.

I enjoy getting off the beaten path. I always have and there have been times I wish I hadn't. Most of those times have been in the US.

Yeah, I guess I am commercial because I am starting a free date site.  It's ok with me.  Anyway, I am serious about winging it.  I am not "well travelled"  just a bit wild - not looking to be a sex tourist but not looking to marry the first girl that comes along either.  If I go it will be in 4-5 months when my work contract ends.  I have a buddy in Holland that I could meet up with and drive down to Ukraine with.  He doesn't speak the language either but he is well travelled.

Driving to Ukraine from Holland is quite a ride, you might want to fly and rent a car there. It will save you some possible wild stories about customs and road police. ;)

I'd probably take the train rather than drive in Ukraine.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten
