Just saw this on the internet.

Was wondering also what your favorite brands of vodka are?

The lable on that bottle reads "Russian Standard Vodka", and that's a  hard brand to beat, however, IMHO, there are some "handmade" vodkas  from Ukraine that are mighty tasty.  I was given a couple of  bottles for Christmas, from (of all places) Lugansk. Ukr which were far  superior to anything I've had before.

Let's face it, those people just know how to make good vodka.

JB, you make a great point.  There are alot of good smaller town vodka's throughout Russia and Ukraine, but availability is a problem.  I like Russky Standard Platinum because of the consistency and availability.

I think I posted this somewhere before, but after the 1980 Winter Olympics, workers cleaning the dormitories found 120 empty vodka bottles stowed away in the drop-ceilings of the Russian dorms :)

"Russian Standart" of course. I try to bring 10-15 bottles every time I go to Russia. In St. Pete they have the only vodka musem in the country, a very interesting place. You should visit it if you have time. :)

Can you get Russian Standard in the US? If so, is there someplace online that it can be ordered? If not, what is the best you can get here? and where?

Big problem with a state like VA is the liquor store is state controlled so you only get what they want to stock.

I Always thought that those drinks which were "handmade" were not "vodka" at all but samogon ( if it's Russian" or "gorilka" if it's from Ukraina )May be it's tasty but it's NOT "vodka" :P
true vodka should be made by mixing in weight ( bit not in
volume) proporsions of spirit ( from grain) and water Only such method can give pricesely 40*( but not 39,** and not 40,**) vodka It was proved sicentifically that only 40* allowed to catch with filtres all bad admixture. (Mostly homemade samogon and gorilka are stronger than 40* and have more fusel additions )

As true Muscovite I can say only that Moscow Crystal ( brand) vodka is counted like the best vodka in Russia :D

Yes, sorry for my error (and for writing Elena instead of Elen - the fingers just naturally typed the "a" as it is my wife's name).

Organic Chemistry - right after Nap Time and before Recess

Putinka isn't a bad low priced vodka.  It was pretty popular about two years ago, but some others have more recently stolen it's thunder.

It has a pop up pourer that doesn't seal closed very well.  I had a bottle of it arrive home with me in the US wrapped with red, white, and blue tape courtesy of the TSA.  :P

Vodka?  I can barely handle beer and wine.  I don't have the stamina for hard alcohol.

Low ( as you call it) price dose not mean low quality :P
And it has not lost its quality since 2004 when it won grand pri in Russia http://www.putinka.ru/eng_2.html#aw

You just should buy it in proper places
And if you want something for  high price you may buy that:P

We were in the "Red Square" restaurant in Mandalay Bay Casino where they boast of 100's of vodka varieties.  I handed Lena the vodka menu for her to order a bottle.  Well, they must rely on us Americans not knowing our vodka from our elbow because they were out of the first 4 or 5 brands she called for.  Finally, I told them to just bring us a bottle of Stoli Chrystal.

Bruce,

FYI, Tver produces some very fine vodkas too.  My MIL brings me a variety of flavors and bottles on every visit.

My "in case of emergency" bottle of waltz Boston, not a luxury vodka, but I really like it for a mid-priced offering. Catnmouse, see if you can find either ZYR or Imperia in VA, both excellent and both available here in FL.

We have a bottle of that, right behind the Russian Standard on the refrigerator door.  My wife uses it for medicinal purposes, to make her potions.  Interesting how most home cures involve either a vegetable or vodka.  ;)
