Translation software and "Russifying" your computer
« on: March 08, 2010, 09:17:39 PM »
Hey guys,
I found some past discussions on this topic but they are a few years old, so I want to ask again:

1) Anyone has recommendation for a good Russian/English translation software; something that could do a decent job with translating entire sentences.  I know there’s probably nothing out there that could translate an entire sentence perfectly, but which software have you found to do the best job?  I’m using a free online translator (PROMT) now but would like to purchase/download a good translation program for use on my laptop for the times that I can’t get connected.  PROMT seems to be a hit/miss with sentence translations.  Some translations are dead on.  Some can cause serious misunderstandings with the ladies.

2) What’s the best way to “Russify” my computer and keyboard?  I want to be able to type in Cyrillic characters with my keyboard.

thanks

Several of the women I have been corresponding with have used translation software, but as far as Russian - English, they have done a poor job. I have seen much better results using Google Translate.

As far as typing in Cyrillic goes, I've been using this link:

http://winrus.com/screen_e.htm

It's a good temporary replacement for having a Cyrillic keyboard, but it can be a pain copying and pasting everything. For a long term solution, you will want to look for Cyrillic keyboard stickers. You can find them quite easily on Amazon.

PROMT is probably the best of the stand-alone packages available - though expensive.

In terms of Cyrillic keyboard stickers, you can find a large assortment in the RWD Storefront - click on "Computers".

You can also check out www.RussianKeyboards.com.

Good luck,

- Dan

For question 2, I'm not sure if this is answer to what you're asking, but you can set your keyboard up to type in Russian by going to

(for XP)
Control panel
Date, Time, Language
Add other languages
Details
Add
You switch back and forth by CTRL + SHIFT or the menu bar

(vista)
Control panel
Regional and Lanugages
Keyboard and Languages
Change Keyboards
Add
You switch back and forth by ALT + Shift or the menu bar

You/ll need the stickers or write them on paper then tape on.

There is no such software. No translation software can do a good job on anything more complex than two words.

Read here if you wish to understand why: www.translation-service.ru/faq.html.
