Russian Average Salary
« on: June 27, 2010, 04:42:21 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I have a question about salary for an average Russian.

Can someone please tell me what the average weekly or monthly wage or salary is for a normal Russian worker?  A police officer or a teacher ?

Thank you

 :)

As I understand it, most all salaries in FSU are stated in terms of monthly amounts.

Many teachers can be down around $100 - 200 per month.  But I know some who work in Lyceums and Gymnasiums (both open only to high ability students) get around $500 per month.  Plus some can almost double that salary with private lessons, but only if they are in the demand areas of Math and English.  Biology, Chemistry and Physics teachers can also earn some, but not as much as Math and English teachers.

University professors earn between $200 - 700 per month, with a few superstars in the sciences over $1,000 per month.

ManLooking is right that in Russia, all salaries are determined on a monthly basis.

My approach to salaries would be that in the first line, one should understand whether the person works for the state (for government) or for the business. The state salaries tend to be lower than those in the business sector. Other than that, salaries of people who work for businesses located in Moscow are often several times higher than those of people working for businesses outside Moscow. The salaries in Moscow would somehow be close to Western standards. Having said that, the 6-figure salaries of Russian executives working in international corporations are still rare in Moscow.

Police officers or teachers look to me as people employed by the state in Russia, therefore probably the figures given by ManLooking seem to be close to reality.

Last but not least, unlike in the West, salaries in Russia are not the prohibited topic to talk about. Usually people are relatively open to discuss salaries, if not their own, then that of someone with similar background and position.

I wouldn't say it's 100 $ for a teacher, it's below even the required minimun salary. Probably 200-400$ depending on the type of an educational institution is close to the truth.
An avarage monthly salary in Russia as a whole may vary from 150 till 600$ though there are positions where we can make even 1000-2000$ but this can't be considered as avarage :D.
And yes, jaguar7777, you are right, Moscow is the other story :).

I couldn't say about Russia, but a couple of years ago a Ukrainian police officer and I worked out that his salary was $216 per month after about three years on the job. Teachers have generally indicated that this is about the same range as their salaries, although I met a lady who taught in a much smaller town and if I remember correctly she was making just under $170.

Doctors, nurses and medical technicians seem to share salaries which are pretty close to each other compared to US healthcare salary structures, though the three positions have varying opportunities for additional "fees" and some doctors have a portion set aside for their "staff" much like a waitress splits a portion of their tips with the busboys and cooks.

I talked with one Ukrainian nurse who had actually been in the US for 6 months and certified in Georgia as an RN. She was happy to be working in a private clinic for $500 per month. She had hoped to move to the US but the program which sent her for validation of her RN had no more openings when she finished the process.

Apparently no one wants to be a fireman since the pay is slightly less than cops and there is little or no opportunity for "extra" payments.

UA Programmers I have been working with over 10 years now average much more.. on par with a 'normal' EU salary, somewhere between 1.5 and 2k per month EUR.  We're not talking Kiev either..

According to official data, average salary in Russia is 18 thousand roubles a month, in Moscow its 32 thousand roubles, use a currency converter, for example xe.com to convert.
Government employed people like school/university teachers, police officers and a few doctors and etc are THE lowest paid people. Now if exact same people go and work in a private clinic/school, their salary doubles or triples.
Depends on what you do. Ive seen job ads for a starting programmer position at 55k a month.

I hope you use it wisely. Remember that life in the FSU is very different and a lower salary does not have to indicate lower standard of life.
A lot of factors come in to play, such as if they own an apartment, prices in the area where they live and how much "Western"luxury they surround themselves with.
If you really wish to know something, do not just ask for income but check the expenses as well.
