Jobs in USA using Russian language skills for FSU ladies
« on: July 09, 2010, 03:48:25 PM »
FSU ladies who are living in USA.

What is the employment situation with regard to using your Russian language skills?

For instance, many of our 'security organizations' from the CIA, FBI, NSA, etc. on down need persons with dual English - Russian language skills.  Even police departments in the larger cities.

But are these type of jobs closed to you because of needing to be natural born citizens, etc.?

Or is it the case that these jobs do exist, but mostly only in Washington, DC and a very few other cities; thus being viable only to those FSU persons who happen to be married to an American who works in those same cities?

What are opportunities for teaching Russian in schools, colleges, universities?

Are these latter jobs closed to you because of needed teaching certificates?
Or maybe there is just too little demand for Russian teachers.

A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

As an FYI, keep an open mind on this issue.

In the Boise metro there was an advertisement in December for Wells Fargo lookng for a Customer Service Representative, no experience necessary/will train, requires Russian Language.

In my home city of Memphis, Federal Express has a preference in their customer service center for languages and Russian is one of those they have on the list.

Not all call centers are outsourced offshore.

There is a good bet that there are some vacancies for information gatherers at the present.

Not great, but then, I have no problem not using Russian in my work.  My current employer, a market/media research firm, has some Russian language work for me occasionally but mostly it's English and French.

Never wanted a gov't job, so I can't say what the demand is like in security or in education.  I imagine, any job that would require a security clearance would automatically require a citizenship.

The problem will be that even if the job requires Russian, she will almost surely have to communicate with her coworkers, managers and others in English through reports, conversation, email, etc.

If you're sure she's "the one" then get her in English classes ASAP, add English channels to her TV mix, urge her to sing along w/ songs she likes IN ENGLISH, have her watch movies in English w/ English subtitles, Skype every waking minute and urge her to talk in English every chance she gets.

If she's moving here, it's highly unlikely you can overdo the English skill development.

According to Wikipedia the 2000 USA census reported about 710,000 native Russian speakers over the age of 5 in the USA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_the_United_States#Russian While this might sound like there is a chance to put Russian language skills to work I seriously doubt that the jobs requiring Russian would be for anything more important than a customer service agent or sales in areas of the country with large Russian populations.

When my family lived in London the jobs my wife found that required Russian language skills almost always involved sales or CSAs, London has a large Russian population.  There were translation jobs posted but the qualifications were quite extensive.  They required native fluency in Russian and near perfect scores on English competency tests along with degree(s) in English and linguistics.

There are some jobs, even a few somewhat high-paying govt. and healthcare positions, but then there is the question of whether she has education and experience to get her into them. Also, the "good" govt. jobs are in the DC Beltway area.

Always remember that a recession is a good time to retool with education which will probably be useful to her mastering of English anyway.

Anyway, here's a few jobs (the formatting of the links may need to be pieced back together to look them over):
