When did your wife start to work?
« on: July 29, 2010, 10:00:36 AM »
I understand that speaking english is necessary to find decent employment and some RW are more proficient at it than others when they first arrive. Given your wife's speaking skills, when did the both of you approach the issues of going to work? How did you go about finding something that she felt good at?

My wife arrive knowing only "okay." She started studying English at the local immigrant center 6 months or so after arriving and started working two years after arriving in Canada (a part-time job).

Interestingly enough Viking, the underlying reason why my wife got part time work was to aid her language/conversation skills and also give her a bit of confidence and comfort to mix in with the society at large on her own. I think 6-8 months since she first arrived she got a job at Armani Exchange. Then when she started college, she quit and got a PT job as a hostess at the marina Charthouse 3 nts/wk. That lasted 3 months until she enrolled at Cal-State, which demanded most of her time. Prior to grad last year, she got a full time job and had been working there since.

8 months in my wife still isn't working yet, although she wants too very much. Part of it is the economy in michigan is bad right now and hard to even find fast food jobs much less anything else. She will continue to look once we move to LA.

very similar circumstances for my ex,
her english was decent on arival, but her getting some part time work really helped in her adjustment and emersion..
she wanted to,  as it kept her busy.. and acknowledged that it forcerd her to be more proactive in speaking /interacting,
so hastened her becoming more "herself" and feeling more at home and comfortable in the new surroundings and culture.

I started working approx. after 6 months since being in the UK, I arrived in the middle of crisis and there were no jobs for anyone there, my husband never persuaded me to work , but I think he was proud of me that I started earning something for myself and obviously  interacted with people, get accustomed to new society and get started so to say. I am living in the UK for 2 years now.

As it turns out, it's the best way for them to learn English and social skills.

She is now learning full time french, she should start to work in 1 year now (time to finish to learn french). We have already made her resume, I have a few contacts interested to hire her and our work strategy is already defined : I will continue to work as permanent employee (with a very stable position and good benefits), after 2 years of Canadian experience, she will move as consultant.

My wife got here 14 months ago and luckily , my wife loves sewing , was her profession in Russia .
We recently sent out 6500  post cards via mail ,(junk mail) and got lots of calls  .        Well , maybe 30 in all and still coming  .          She has  has a couple of $100 days  of income  ,  she's in heaven cuzz a big day in  back home is maybe $15  .     She is also considering  housekeeping  ,   paying $15 an hour  or  up to  $40 an hour   if performed on a bid bases .
There's a local  collage  too  ,  she is considering  some classes and I am hoping  business , like a entrepreneurship degree or a retail management class , anything to teacher  her about American  small  business .

Her English   is fair with me  ,but when someone else  enters  the picture   , she  regresses  , forgets   a lot of English  .

She was working as a nanny for a Ukrainian couple within 5 months of arriving in the US. This may not be a great job but it is a starting point.
