This part sounds tasty and pretty much healthy to me (except for salt fish).

Since when pig's fat became healthy? :D

Russiangal,

Is that your picture? You look very much like Alicia Silverstone in my opinion.

"I think I am teaching my family to eat healthier since I don't eat beef or pork.

My wife cooks chicken or fish with fresh vegetables. She still will eat the salt fish and pig fat several times a week and tends to her "milk mushroom".

They are always snacking on sweets, chewing gum or eating potato chips.

Is there a suttle way to curb this behavior? "

There sure is, don't buy any.

BC, I really thought it was a good picture but Russiangal took it down shortly after I made my statement.

Beautiful women are beautiful women and if we ever stop noticing them because we are married we must be in trouble.

I will never forget that my wife is the most beautiful woman to me.

Actually I stopped eating beef and pork partly because I am an animal lover and partly because of fat and cholesterol.

I went to a county fair when I was younger where the animals were being shown. I realized that to some extent the children had become fond of these animals they had raised and soon the animals were going to end up on someone's dinnerplate.

I cannot bring myself to stop eating chicken and fish (maybe because these animals seem more expressionless, and not as cute).

When I was older I started reading that eating beef and pork was not so great after all.

So maybe I have saved the lives of a few animals since 1982 when I stopped eating a lot of meat.

Which fat are you talking about here? Saturated or unsaturated?

I would be failing as a contributor if I did not ask:  What the hell is up with all the friggin MAYO??  Is it just me?  Ive sampled a few Russian dishes at SoC's house... must were frightening.  The liver cake thing might have been more to my liking though if it were chicken liver as opposed to beef.  And before there was a really good soup.  Otherwise... yikes.  It might just be me but I find Mayo the most repugnant foodstuff on the planet.

As for the boy I wouldnt worry what he eats he has a hummingbird metabolism.  Also keep in mind that everything is ok in moderation.  The gum chewing shouldnt concern you unless they are putting it under tables or something like naughty pupils I have to scowld at school.  If they are chewing gum, they arent chewing chips, cookies and what not.  While there is suger in a little piece of gum its less then in an apple.  Also I find that chewing gum makes me less likely to snack by both keeping my mouth busy, and tiring out my jaw to the point I dont really want to eat much.

Yeah, the mayo thing real got to me as well and I actually like mayo.  In my imagination the average RW potato salad would have about 3 times the mayo of american potato salad.

Amazingly I mentioned the large amount of mayo and the fact that I didn't like to my fiance on my trip in October.  Guess what I went back for New Years and Christmas, and she and her family made the salads without mayo just for me.  (Of course they added into their helpings)  To me that's love and showing you care.

As like anything though the key is moderation.

I just heard about the new food import from Ukraine; chocolate covered salo bars.  So far they were not a big hit in NYC where they are being test marketed.

Unsaturated as you can see from my previous post.
You got me very interested in the info about pork fat. I finally saw our relative who teaches nutrition. So, her professional opinion - pork fat is saturated and bad for your health. You may, though, have a little of it, say for lunch, from time to time, it won't kill you.

If you want a simple solution to your dieting and weight problems, I will give you a sure fire method that has never let me down. Take your butt to the gym. If at all possible, you need to do it the first thing when you wake up. Studies have been shown that 20 minutes in the morning is more effective than an hour right before you go to bed. Don't just do cardio, either. Cardio isn't going to build your muscle mass, which is what you need to really take the fat off. You need to lift weights. By increasing your muscle mass, your body is going to need to burn more calories and is going to dip into the fat reserves. Don't forget to do your legs, either. A lot of people make this mistake, but the legs are the largest muscle group your body has and will increase your blood flow, which in turn is going to increase your muscle mass everywhere else. I don't know which genius came up with the body weight charts, but those things are only telling half the story at best. Don't pay any attention to those. By working out, you may gain 10 pounds of muscle and lose 10 pounds of fat, but you are going to lose inches and that is really what most people use to determine if somebody is fat or not. Fat takes up 3 times as much space per square inch as muscle does.

I would suggest dieting, but you can slack off once you get your physique to a manageable level. Actually, you need to eat 6 small meals a day instead of 3 when starting out. Now, don't make it crap like potato chips, but lean ground beef or sirloin is not going to hurt you, either. Neither is lamb or pork. I personally like to mix some wild game into my diet, but I realize this may not be a viable option for everyone.

A few years ago, I had gotten a little heavy due to a knee injury and too many beers without a solid workout regimen to take care of the extra calories. I was up to about 245 and had a 38 inch waist. I got on the body for life program and it was amazing the results I was able to achieve. Within 6 weeks, I was back down to 34 inch pants and was weighing in at 210. It really does work if you stick to the plan and follow it out. I have avoided putting the weight back on by staying dedicated to a work out regimen. I am about 215 right now, but my waist is around 33. I don't want to put the link to his site in here, but you could probably find it by googling body for life.

Have any of you had something pronounced Galoop-shi?

It is either a curse word or stuffed cabbage.

I have made many mistakes trying to pronounce the food dishes.

Ive actually had this yes.  My mother used to make it alot when I was a litte boy, still does make it from time to time.  I dont really care for it much but many people do.  Its a meat and rice (with im sure other stuff in it) stuffed into  cabbage rolls and in a tomato kinda sauce.  My father and sister love the stuff as does my mother.  Ive not seen anyone else really eat it or see it served anywhere.
