Why Skype?
« on: August 06, 2010, 08:42:51 PM »
I have seen many members recommend using Skype for communications. I don't have any experience using it. I know that there is one advantage to using it, being able to talk from a computer to a phone. Are there any other advantages to using Skype over any other messenger service, like lets say Yahoo Messenger? I would like some input so that I can recommend to my fiance so that she will be able to communicate with her family after she arrives here.

There are many different I.P. telephone services available. I have been using an I.P. telephone for years as my home phone.

I use a regular telephone connected to my computer, which allows me to call to any other telephone in the world as well as receive calls from any other telephone.

The benefits: Unlimited FREE calling to all of Europe, North America, Scandinavia and my for my wife, we have 45 minutes free to Ukraine (very inexpensive rates afterwards). (monthly service fee of $26)

The connections are very good (my brother on the west coast is allways amazed by the quality of the connection when we talk).

The advantages are limitless. My wife speaks daily via Skype to her mother and other friends and family, all for free. For about $15 bucks a month she can also call her friends who do not have or are not set up on Skype. Same price mobile or landline phone (500 minutes per month IIRC). She never uses all her minutes.

I took a laptop over on my 2nd or 3rd trip with Skype set up on it for no other purpose than to communicate with her. Saved myself $100-125 bucks a month in phone calls alone. When she came to the states she wanted to bring the laptop and I had to insist she leave it and teach her 80 yr old mother how to use it (a whole nother story). I got her another when she arrived.

The reasons Skype is so popular are that it's cheap, popular throughout the world and more and more communication devices are being built or adapted to use it.

advantages? video (yes other services also provide it)

being able to see the persons reactions , emotions  while speaking .
mannerisms, body language ,
particularly when speaking to someone not in their first language, is a pretty big advantage.
on both sides of the equation?

Like everyone said, Skype is free and it doesn't get any better than that. Add the video feed, it's the next best thing to being 'there'. We use Skype at times although I/we prefer Messenger much better because of the bigger video screen and less dead feeds. VoiP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a good tool. We use this for our call centers.

Currently we're on a hot zone. Most new developments have fiber optics directly to the homes and this makes everything else blaze amazingly faster, internet, HD viewing, etc…get ready for blazing 3D telecast, internet, video feeds, etc…Holograms are likely a decade away. Holodecks...hhhmmmm...+/- 20  ;D

I run MagicJack at home which cost me $20.00/yr with free and unlimited calling anywhere in the US, Canada, & Puerto Rico. The added feature to that is you can pull it out of your computer if you travel and install it on any computer anywhere in the world and you'll be able to call to those same regions for free.

Anyway, for the latest zip on communication tech, visit this site.

As AJ said free voice and video anywhere in the world. When your lady is on the other side of the planet daily visual contact is invaluable. When she is here and moma is on the other side of the planet daily visual contact is invaluable.

The main advantage of Skype over other electronic messengers is their phone network, which allows you to call to fixed or mobile phone lines at attractive rates.

Once the other side has a fast internet connection, there is a number of possibilities for communication. Before asking video do check the nature of the internet connection on the other side. Free unlimited traffic is not available anywhere and if paid by Mb traffic it can become expensive for the women, which will be noticed by less contact time by in the second half of the paymnet period.

I never use Skype for LL connections, only PC-PC and it's free so what problem can anyone have other than Internet access? I was ether at home or would go to McDonald's at Lva Tolstogo and Maidan an just chat away with the folks back home. My wife and I keep the Skype connection open for hours every day and just watch TV, read or shout out to each other every now and then.

Love it.

There are a number of services who offer all that Skype does, some even including the phone service.
MSN
ICQ
Yahoo
Xfire

... just to name a few, all are free.
It depends on which service is currently popular and used by the ladies.

Microsoft to end Skype service May 5.

Code was first spotted by XDA this morning as a message inside of the latest Skype for Windows preview reading "Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue your calls and chats in Teams."

The tech giant 'fessed up shortly after that the service will be no more from May this year, although this does not impact Skype for Business.

Weeks after sunsetting Skype to Phone services and nearly three months after ending its JV with Korea's Daesung group, Skype Daesung, Microsoft has at last called time on the once popular service.

I don't understand some of your wording.
In first paragraph you noted that  announcement was made about Skype termination.

In second paragraph you made it sound like an announcement was not made, and later it was 'fessed up.'

Have you tried the Teams method ?

Thanks

First line was my summation of the article, rest was quote from article.

Last time I used Skype was to talk to Dasha in Luhansk before the invasion. Telegram (software) is more popular.

That's a shame if true. I remember when Skype here was the standard website for all video calls and what often followed after an amount of emails or messaging. Another sad day as to how things were and have changed in FSU dating. Still many services around now for video chat on WhatsApp and elsewhere so while the name has changed the same still goes on.

FSU dating will still go on but as usual we see it evolve over time and use different methods and drop old ones. It can be a pain for those accustomed to old methods and had learnt how to use those old methods to their advantage in the FSW search. I remember back in 2016-2017 I think it was that email was still being used to communicate with the women. Not so long after that was all out the door and WhatsApp, Viber, and later Telegram came along and if all moved to that. I still find WhatsApp the most useful App to be used and of course has video chat also.

Will be interesting to see how FSU dating evolves in the future, though of course I hope I won't need. Sometimes it can be disturbing I think when a new method in dating crops up and makes me think, 'couldn't they just keep it how it was' it can really throw you off and feel like a negative sometimes then of course there is getting with the new method if it sits very easy with you.
