That makes sense as potatoes were first discovered in the Andes and brought to Europe by the Spaniards 400-500 years ago.

Never tell a Peruvian.. because its "fightin words" but.. as far as the Mayans are concerned.. they domesticated to potato and exported it to the Inca.  Frankly, given the fact that chocolate, tomatos, vanilla, avacado, tabacco, CORN, chile, and so many other foods that are basic to the world diet were in fact domesticated by the Mayans I would have to go with their explanation.  On top of that..I think I mentioned in an earlier post.. the word potato is a variant of the Nahautl (Aztec) potatl as are tomato and chocolate...

Ah, I looked it up:
Quote
The traditional ingredients for Alfredo Sauce, as used in the basic recipe of Fettuccine Alfredo, are simple: Fettuccine pasta, butter, cream and Parmesan.

I must say that adding cream to a pasta sauce sounds more French than Italian :(:-\. As a matter of fact, the original Roman restaurant Alfredo alla Scrofa does NOT use it:

Had to look that up, too, unheard of here:

Quote
The salad's creation is generally attributed to restaurateur Caesar Cardini (an Italian-born Mexican).Cardini was living in San Diego but also working in Tijuana where he avoided the restrictions of Prohibition. As his daughter Rosa (1928–2003) reported, her father invented the dish when a Fourth of July 1924 rush depleted the kitchen's supplies. Cardini made do with what he had, adding the dramatic flair of the table-side tossing "by the chef".

Sandro,

when it is tasty it really doesn't matter  :P  mmm

I don't use cream, I add a little bit of parsley and garlic. I prefer to melt cheese with shrimp and then add pasta and mix everything together. I also boil pasta with herbs and spices.

this is the common myth that the salad was invented at Caesars Palace in Tijuana.. however.. in Mexico City this story is disputed.. at any rate.. the sorry excuse for Caesars Salad served in the USA and all over StP is really tragic if you have ever had the real thing.

That clip mentioned anchovies, which reminded me of a famous Piedmontese specialty called bagna càuda:

Quote
Bagna càuda, (from the Piedmontese "hot sauce", alternatively written bagna caôda or bagnacauda, etymologically related to Italian root bagn-, meaning "wet") is a warm dip typical of Piedmont, Italy, but with numerous local variations. The dish, which is served and consumed in a manner similar to fondue, is made with garlic, anchovies, olive oil, butter, and in some parts of the region cream. (In the past walnut or hazelnut oil would have been used.) Sometimes, truffles are used in versions around Alba. The dish is eaten by dipping raw, boiled or roasted vegetables, especially cardoon, carrot, peppers, fennel, celery, cauliflower, artichokes, and onions. It is traditionally eaten during the autumn and winter months and must be served hot, as the name suggests.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagna_càuda

Eating bagna càuda is a communal experience because the dip is warmed in an earthenware pot - the fojòt, heated by a small spirit burner under it - placed at the centre of the table and everybody dips their vegetables in it.

After a bagna càuda, one could prolong the communal experience with a caffe' alla valdostana - Val d'Aosta is a mostly French-speaking Alpine region in the extreme NW of Italy - drunk in turns from a wooden grolla:

Grolla for 8

Recipe for 4:
- 4 cups of hot coffee
- 2 small glasses of grappa
- 1 lemon peel
- 4 spoonfuls of sugar
- 1 small glass of Genepy (a local herb liqueur)

Brezhnev refuses to eat his kolbasa after he hears a rumor that they put very poor quality meat in it that could, apparently, get you sick. So, he creates a committee to investigate.. A week later he hears from the committee chair: Dear Leonid Ilyich, kolbasa is perfectly safe for your consumption - we have found no trace of meat.. :D

Here's my husband's joke for you, possum

At a press conference, a journalist asks Brezhnev "Leonid Ilyich, do you have any hobbies?"
"As a matter of fact, I do", Brezhnev answers.
"If it's not a secret, can you tell us about your hobby?"
"I collect jokes and anecdotes about myself."
"How many have you collected so far?"
"Hmm hmm.  About 2 or 3 camps full."
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

I am fine, honestly, it's just as I said I understand Ecocks, because you just can not get the RIGHT taste :)

Much better on the typing.

Also, it's true that boiling the large Russet baking potatoes results in a REALLY strange taste. The small red ones are much more suited to this use.

Food - love varenyky (or as we Western Ukrainian call them, "pyrohy").  I would never eat them with olive oil though.  Only butter.  I don't use sour cream.  My husband and my boys use a mixture of melted butter, sour cream and vinegar.  Also love holubtsi, especially with sour cabbage and salt pork, beets, raw tomatoes, and peaches.  However, my favourite meal is sushi.

:D :D :D

It's 2020, communism has prevailed all over eastern europe and in the Soviet Union.. An American tourist comes to Moscow and is greeted not by a KGB agent, but by a plumber.. So, he's perplexed, he says to the plumber: You know I was here 20 years ago, and everything was different, there was a KGB guy waiting for me.. And the plumber goes, well, it was me, I was that guy meeting you, I'm a plumber now as you can see.. The American is surprised, he goes: What happened?. The plumber says: You know, it's communism, everybody's happy, there's no need for a KGB type agency anymore.. The American goes: well, that makes sense! But why did you become a plumber and not something more noble? And he goes: Well, after you've been in the country for a while, you're going to need a plumber to pump the chit out of your head that they're going to put in it.. :o

Yes, Olga. Val d'Aosta is a very popular skiing area - Mont Blanc is there - a 2-3 hour drive from Milan.

The Hamburg-based pen manufacturer is Montblanc - single word ;).

When I was an IBM Systems Engineer a LONG time ago, one of my customers - then a producer of carbon paper - was also their official distributor for Italy. I was able to buy from them a solid-silver set of pen, pencil, and ballpoint pen for a high but comparatively reasonable price :D.
