« on: September 25, 2010, 11:01:33 AM »
I was watching television (football) and Marina came out of our bedroom noticeable upset with red eyes.
I asked her, what's wrong?
She said come here Rick, I want to show you something on the computer.
I wanted to share it with you ladies and anybody else on the forum that is interested.

Yes, a really sad picture.  :'(

A cat was apparently killed by car or just died, and another cat came and, believing that his or her friend can be revived, started to work on him or her.

What else can be said here?

If someone knew Turkish, we might have some more details on the incident ;). The two cats look like young siblings, which could explain their strong mutual attachment. A very moving video.

it is  a sad video--

I do think most cat owners would confirm that this particular behavior shown
(kneeding /making bread )  isn't unusual though, while the circumstance is (and sad).

my cat does this often  to the dog when he is sleeping, or to humans in the house  if they are resting,,and it sometimes *seems* they will do this more often when a person is feeling poorly
(like they know and trying to help)

************
A somewhat related odd and sad story-
in my youth i lived on my grandfathers  farm,,lots of barn cats, and a bird dog(english setter, quick agile)The cats slept on the bird dog , (she was a sweetheart in all ways)
and they all got along fine.
she NEVER chased them , and generally very much liked the cat attention of rubbing on her..

My aunt would bring her dog over, they would both play together,
were great pals,
but her dog (german shepard) absolutely loved chasing the cats
and was serious in intent to harm them ,but simply never fast enough to catch one ..

The bird dog(setter) would join in the chase ,(but never catch a cat even though she could have)
and they always did this ,a routine for years.

when my aunt (and dog ) would leave, the various cats would be right back sleeping on ,
or rubbing on the bird dog, and all pals.

Over the years, my aunts dog aged a bit faster and health deteriorated to the point that he  could no longer give chase, one day she brought him over, knowing it was time to visit the vet and have him put to sleep.
The setter seemed to know he was very ill and on his last days, she kept trying to encourage him to get up and chase the cats.. would generally take care of him as dogs
will  a wounded pal..lick him ,lay by him, keep nudging him to get up..etc..
this was not not suprising.

However she left for a bit out towards the barn.. ( hadn't really noticed what she was up to ,was making arrangements with the vet)

She comes back and lays a cat she had caught and killed by his head...
like she knew this was what he always had wanted to accomplish , and to make him feel better..

we were all just shocked,(she had never killed anything)
, and it was so sad on so many different levels..
( i think even my grandfather shed a tear)

after my aunts  was taken to the vet, the bird dog ,  never chased the cats again..or ever harmed one, and they continued their friendly relations..

Pets have some amazing relationships between them..

Very close AJ...

To be PC, cats are companions hence ownership is not proper. Human companions, depending on their behavior, are simply leaders of the pride. Cats will behave towards their human companion/s accordingly. A person's behavior with their cats, and/or other domesticated animals, determines if their animal companion will yield to them as leaders of the pride/pack/band, etc...

I've been around cats most of my life and kneading is in fact a positive behavior. It is borne from the time when they were newly born and are still milking. The kneading action is actually derivative from 'treading for milk'. Cats brought this behavior along throughout their lives to show contentment and ease.

The video is sad from a humanistic point of view because we try to define the behavior in accordance to our humanistic view. However, there is in fact some event missing in the video to make a full on explanation of the scene.

1. Kneading denotes a very relaxed condition.
2. The gesture where the cat brushed his/her chin against the other one laying on the ground is a gesture cats do when exchanging/discharging pheramones. This behavior helps to mark their scent. Cats do this on walls, trees, human legs, and one another...identification by scent.
3. Cats are much more instincual than emotional. The emotional attachments are quickly abandoned at the first sign of injury or disease. Any two cats who had lived together all their lives will quickly abandon, or even attack, each other when there's a sign one of them is about to fall gavely ill and/or die - hence prone to become weak and become prey.

I have a feeling the tabby either just arrived to the scene without first realizing his/her pal is dead, or may have just died. Cats can actually lower their heart rate way down, as do many animals in the wild. This helps them to adapt to many variables in their natural environment and also to help manage pain and suffering. Slowing down the rate at which pain nerves send messages to the brain helps them cope with the pain and thus eventually the healing process. Thus, I believe this cat simply saw the other and took it that the cat was asleep. No sign of blood and even a scent of disease/injury to cause an instinctual reaction..the position of the ears also tells me there's no sign of distress or otherwise, like horses, it'll be folded back.

One common misnomer with cats are that they are a fastidious animal because they bury their waste. This is not the case at all. This behavior simply show that domesticated cats do this as a sign they had yielded leadership to someone else. Leaders of the pride do not and will not bury their waste to ensure the odor is released and tells everyone of his presence and territory. If you have a cat that's doing this at home, it generally means 'it' thinks itself as the leader of the pride/pack - and not you, the human. One can easily change that behavior by executing change in the person's behavior - not the cats (nyet, having you pottying all over the carpet is not what I'm referring to).

Fine.  She now weighs about 115 lbs.  Extremely fast for a dog that size.  Not fast enough to catch deer, yet she can stay close for 50-100 meters, forcing the deer to veer into the wetlands to escape her.

Your dogs weigh more I assume.

Does your dog need a permit to chase deer?

My dog, a female, is now about 95 pounds. And these Black Russian Terriers can run like the wind. And talk about protective. She went after a black bear that jumped over our fence and into the yard. That bear took off back over the fence in about 15 seconds. The dog went over the 4 foot fence in one jump and chased the bear for about a quarter mile. I had to get in my car to get her back. Thank goodness she loves the word "treat". But deers are really fast.

No.  Nor one to chase cars. ;D

I probably am breaking some city ordinance.  For example, my home is within city limits and city regulations mandate that all dogs be leashed (but not cats).  However, I am surrounded by golf course and wetlands and don't bother with a leash.

The wetlands are home to abundant wildlife.   The deer feed along the margin of the wetlands and the golf course, and when walking my dog we occasionally startle a deer, and the chase is on.

If you are concerned about the deer, they have a larger worry.  Over the past year, a panther has been sighted several times but not by me,  other than its tracks once observed in the sand bunkers.  The deer population has dwindled noticeably.

Another way of stating this is the cat, like any animal, uses poop/pee as an instrument of to express their dissatisfaction.  It happens with people too, to varying degrees, most often as a rebellion against adult responsibility.

A bear!  I thought your home is on Long Island.  Two legged bear?   :D  Did it have a ringed tail and a black mask   :D (some well fed raccoons can grow to 20 lbs)?

Gator, I have a house in Northern New Jersey. Used to live there until my divorce. There are many bears, deer, fox and other animals in those foothills. My dog now stays there on occasion. Joint custody. LOL.
