Nigger actually came from the word Niger. The Latin word for the color black.

Exactly, so did the river.

Come on, guys, it doesn't really matter. What I'm trying to say is that our word "negr" is a logical word, which resembles the name of an African river, and it can no way be offensive here on our territory. But we do have a lot of really offensive words for any race and nation, as any language has  :D

The problem with our girls using the word "negr" and more impolite variants while speaking English is that many people don't understand this strange attitude between white and black people of the USA, this strange complexity of language from the side of white Americans. I understand, slavery and other stuff - it's a shame, but we also had slavery here, all the villagers were enslaved - "krepostnie kresyane" - "enslaved villagers". But we don't call them "inhabitants of tiny towns" now - they are still villagers, but free ones. And you can say it with any connotation - neutral or derogative. May be that's why a lot of our people underestimate your "N word" when they come to the USA. But don't worry - american movies are already doing their job. Some young FSU people don't even say "negr" already.

You know what's funny? Some stupid people using the actual word "afroamerican" to refer to black people in Russia. I dont think they quite get the "american" part of that word, considering most of black people in Russia have no connection to america whatsoever.
In dutch language, at least here in Belgium, they also use word "neger" to refer to anyone black. I've heard this word multiple times. I think americans are being way over the top with the political correctness sometimes.

Nitrous,

Tell your friend to keep trying.  While many RW could have a problem with skin color, there are a number of RW who do not care and would instead focus on the man.
and it all comes back to a question: why focus on specific nationality or skin color, and focus on the woman instead..  :rolleyes2:

Yall should remember that in the '60's the N word wasn't offensive in the south USA either, and blacks referred to themselves as (N word) and many still do. now it's not offensive if they call them selves that, only when whites call them that. Im sure it's very confusing for people from other countries
May all your days be blessed.

I agree if your N word means Negroes.  "Nigger" was highly offensive in the 60s in Tennessee and North Carolina.  Not considered offensive would suggest a rural area where blacks were totally oppressed and kept "in their place."

...and blacks referred to themselves as (N word)

In the 60s they would refer to themselves as Negro or Colored People (NAACP). I don't recall Afro-American being used then.  The term "Black" was receiving some use;  "Black power" and "Black is beautiful" originated and spread quickly in the late 60s, early 70s as a cultural movement to dispel the yoke of the past.

If you're white, you're white, if you're black you're black, if you're white, as a potential partner, you'll be considered by a variety of RW, if you're black you'll be considered by a handful of RW.

Don't know about that, calling a black guy a "N------" in the 60's was a sure way to start a fight in Memphis, TN. My impression is that it's never been acceptable for a white guy to call a black person by that term.

I've literally lived all my adult life in Los Angeles and I am still yet to see, let alone 'meet', a black person. Or, for that matter, a white person.

For me, "black" sounds a bit offensive. As well as "colored". I use the word "black" here, because I see that you're using it freely in English - so it must sound ok for you, but I'd never call a negro "black" in Russian. It sounds way too rude. This is what is called "language difference".

In Scotland, the white people tend to be "pink."   Maybe that is from the whiskey. ;)

A small percentage of Russian people are chalky white, so white that they get lost on the bedsheets.

For me, "black" sounds a bit offensive. As well as "colored".

Heard from an African-American sidewalk comedian in Venice Beach...

"Now, I'm not too sure why black/brown/yellow people are called 'colored' people. The truth of the matter is, I think 'white' people should be called 'colored' people. Why? Well, because when white people get sad, they turn 'blue'. When they get sick, they turn 'green'. When they get angry, they turn 'red'. When they get scared, they turn 'pale', when..."

He does have a point, doesn't he?  ;)

Charles Barkley about Larry Bird....

"Man, that boy is so white, he's transparent!"
