Good Kiev Disco - Pub for a Canadian Tourist !?

Hi,


  I'm going to be in Kiev from Jan 2-9th 2011. I was wondering if you could recommend some good safe bars and clubs in Kiev? Preferably one that other Tourists go to. .....

 Also is anyone going there at that time?

No bar or clubs are 100% safe in Kiev.  Best to take a local lady and some of her friends with you.  You can get a table with plenty to eat and drink for around $250 usd a night.  You buy the table and than you get $200 - $250 usd of free food and drink.  Disco radio hall nice and Party Pa (spelling).  But they could be closed as clubs open and close all the time there.  Disco radio Hall was on the river and it maybe closed do to crackdown on the river.

One of my favourite bars is still Arena Citi (The Beerhouse on ground floor) at the end of Kreshatik, even though it's not one of the "in-places" anymore.

You can go in almost any night, pull up a chair at the bar (please do sit at the bar, not in the booths) and almost be certain of striking up a conversation with an expat or foreigner.

Thursday nights (from memory) they have live music and on one night there in September there was a fantastic jazz band.

You can get a  feed, and good reasonably priced beer from their on site microbrewery.

It costs no where near $200 for a decent night out but if you were boasting or throwing your money around it's easy to spend that much anywhere.

I don't think Kiev is any more dangerous than any other city you'll be in.  Just don't be irresponsible and use the normal level of alertness when you're out.

If/when you meet people at Arena they'll be able to advise you on where to go and when.

Another sure fireplace to meet expats is O'Briens pub up at a T-intersection halfway up Mikaelskaya (runs from St Michael's Cathedral down to Independence Square).

The beer is good at O'Briens but I have to warn you about the food.  In my experiences it's always been very average, but the staff are friendly and there is lots of expats.

Another bar/restaurant I can recommend for a feed and a beer is Chateau on Kreshatik approximately across the road from the McDonalds near the Kreshatik Metro Station.  Food is excellent,  beer is great... and if you're game they usually have some home made vodka that hasn't sent me blind yet.

a few weeks ago i have been clubbing a few days running in Kiev.
the night clubs you  may go is
Party Pa (it is one of my favorite, but they have dress code. they do not let you in in sportswear or shoes. even if there is a sports brand name on your clothes they won't let you in).
Caribbean night club (it has decent  prices and quite popular, if you know have to dance Latino dances many girls will like you there )
Avalon night club.
Tsar is not far away from Party Pa.

i agree with Kuna that O'Briens pub is nice place with decent prices. I have been to Golden Gate pub. it was very expensive.
 in the period you come many places might be busy and a bit more expensive.

if this is your photo - i'd advise you to stay on Khreschatik and avoid small dark streets. Just in case. If you have to travel outside of downtown - try not going alone.
Arena-city could be a good place.

Cafe "Marquise Chocolatier"/Chokoladnica - for meeting with the girl. - located at Proreznaya street, 4 - just off Kreschatyk, practically in the same building as the Drum pub.

PaTiPa is ok - has many whores and gold-diggers. But on average girls there look hot. (it's not the Party Pa btw) (http://www.visitkievukraine.com/bars/patipa.htm and http://photo.topdj.ua/42979/) Among local girls it's know as a place "try chances in picking up a guy with cash", and for guys - "to pick up an easy going girl for fun, could get expensive"

even more underground - Cinema (if you are past 30 and not into clubbing, i don't recommend going there). The only foreigners there are usually the DJs, but people in the club are super friendly and you won't have any problems inside the club whatsoever. Opium club used to be quite cool & fun place. Don't know if it still exists. http://www.kiev.info/entertainment/opium.htm Can meet some tourists & expats there. Not too many though. Crowd is friendly.

Sunduk pub - at several locations in downtown, for example Mykhailivska street. Cool place for meeting with friends, having a round of beer, some dinner etc.
 
The options above are my personal favorite (except for PaTiPa and Avalon)

Thanks for the great tips!

 I was in Kiev last year and you don't have to warn me about not straying away from the Center. When I was there everyone looked at me.. and I do mean everyone! Now I know how Lenny Kravitz must feel. Some thought that I played for the national football team lol... Very nice people though.
