Educational level
« on: December 19, 2010, 10:10:58 AM »
I've always wanted to post such poll. First - to find out if there's some connection between the level of education and the idea to look for a wife abroad (I guess there isn't, but it's still interesting to check in reality :)). Second - because here in FSU education level is considered to be quite important and people tend to choose partners with the matching education level, but on the other hand I know a lot of international couples, whose level of education doesn't match, but who are quite happy together. So please feel free to participate :)
It would also be very interesting to know about your attitude to the level of education of the woman you're looking for. Does it matter to you or could you be happy with any woman and her education doesn't matter at all? :)
Oh, guys, and if I messed something up in poll options - please correct me, ok? Because foreign systems of education can be tricky :)

I'm a skilled tradesman and my wife is a PhD in math and physics. We both view education as an indication of earning potential not social status.

You need the American/Western system Master's (between the first University degree, Bachelors and the Doctoral) degree and probably the choice of "Some College" shown to better reflect our options.

Ed is correct, Although I attended college for a brief period I never pursued that option.  I have graduated numerous professional courses (starting with a basic 800 hour academy) over the years. Although I think education is important, I have done quite well without a 4 year degree.  Too many people focus on the 4 year degree and not the higher learning institution they received it from, I have Officers that have 4 year degrees and can't spell worth a damn. In my opinion the Western education system has lowered the standards over the years and people have become lazy.

You left off the choice    "elementary school"

We could go down to a "master in street smarts and common sense" which might be of more use than the normal college degree in the years to come.

I voted for "other" because I have two graduate degrees (MS & MBA), but neither is represented in the poll.  BTW, my significant other has an MBA to go along with her Computer Science degree, so you could say we're pretty well matched  ;D .

LOL - then we would need to add things like "Own a complete set of the Firefox books" and "Ranger graduate". Which we may well come to before this is all over.

Well, I couldn't be happy with just "any" woman, but her education level is not nearly as important to me as natural intelligence, character, sense of humor, that she is FUN, adventurous, great conversationalist, positive, loving, supportive, tender, a wonderfully passionate kisser, flat head to hold a beer, etc etc... those are her real and true treasures IMO...  Now, that being said, I certainly wouldn't refuse to wear the chicken man costume if she does have an advanced degree  :P

Hey!  What about us geniuses that were too smart for high school and got their GED (Good Enough Degree) and some college?

I regret not finishing college, but I got into my own business at 21 and 16 years later still haven't found the need, time or desire to finish it.  Intelligent and book smart are entirely two different things.  I really enjoy talking to highly educated people, it's the rare bird indeed who can match up their pedigree with the realities of common sense.  I find it humorous as he'll at times.

Other times I find people who I'm just in awe of, as they have an almost holistic approach to their reasoning, logic, critical thinking, etc.  Programmers and code guys, who I find boring as hell have this trait which I've always admired.  I wish I could be as concise as some of these gents.

Anyway, I am positively fascinated at the high level of education it seems that the majority of these RW have.  It just makes them that much more intriguing.

Of course, I have no real world experience with any of them yet, so what's in my head vs. What's reality have yet to meet and compare notes.

My friend is a janitor (good income since he got a good union job) and his wife is an Ivy League University professor.  And they have been happily married now for over 20 years.

So, hey, you never know.

I knew a guy who had a PhD in philosophy and was a janitor.  He loved the job, because he was physically active, but also had time to ponder philosophical issues all day.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Well, my friend is certainly no PhD, having just barely squeaked through high school., but his union janitor job turned into big bucks and big time benefits for him and his family.

My expectations on education were non-existent. While I expected intelligence I had no preconceptions concerning occupation or degree. I dated one woman who was a history teacher and had done some work towards her Doctorate, others were an accountant, a librarian, a governess/nanya, a casino cashier, a couple in administrative, office jobs and several selling things like cell phones, souvenirs, etc. Oh and a gal who had a degree but worked in the Customs Agency.

I was more interested in their ability to carry on a conversation and enjoy their lives than their academic credentials. That said, I find that intellectual capacity is often indicated by academic achievement but not assured.

I chose other because, after graduating from high school, I went on to complete the navy's nuclear propulsion program. At that time Newsweek name the officer's training the third toughest post graduate program in the country, behind Harvard and Yale.......Their training was about the same as ours except some of the formulas that we were given, they had to derive themselves.

I preferred a woman with some education (college or university). I also wanted to find a woman who had achieved this education on her own (i.e. not because her parents pushed her or paid for her education). In other words, a woman that was educated and self-motivated and driven to achieve because she wanted to and not because her parents told her to do it.

In the USA, I've always had difficulty relating to people who did not receive the same level of education I have. However, even when I was a child, I could not relate to them either. Genetics does have it place (not to sound arrogant). I personally have noticed that I do not gravitate toward uneducated women, foreign or domestic.

PS- Good Poll  ;D
