In the USA, I've always had difficulty relating to people who did not receive the same level of education I have. However, even when I was a child, I could not relate to them either. Genetics does have it place (not to sound arrogant). I personally have noticed that I do not gravitate toward uneducated women, foreign or domestic.

PS- Good Poll  ;D

So how do you relate to those (men and women) with a greater education level than your own? Just curious.

As a child, you could differentiate your education from that of other children??

Easy, there aren't any. If there are, they are far and few between. In fact most of the time I don't meet them because I'm not living near the university. You'd be surprised how many minions of morons there are out there  :P

There are 6 people who answered "other" to the poll question. Care to explain what might this means?

If parents are affected by their education and how they raise their children, then the children of those parents are also affected, hence so was I as are they.

Interesting...
Since children of the same age are generally of the same education level, how did you break this down? standard curriculum vs advanced? Education level of the parents?

Children/teens can be strange anyway. I remember being ostracized for about a year by kids in the neighborhood who attended the public district school because I transferred to a college prep high school in 10th grade.  It was my parent's idea, not mine, as a 15 year old's interest in education is often eclipsed by such notions as "being a rock star", perhaps partaking in some "herbal treatments" and "medicinal beverages", though I didn't really experiment too much -- I'd call it more of a full scale research program -- and of course chasing the breastosterone induced fantasies.  Luckily one of the three afflictions passed within a couple of years and my "research" took on a more academic connotation.  ;D

pitbull, "other" could refer to those categories previously listed upthread such as "some college/university but no degree", a two year Associate's Degree, or Master's level degree.  I guess "high school dropout" could be one but unlikely around these parts.  Perhaps others as well such as "Gladiator School" (ludus), Geisha Training, Will (Not Actually) Work For Food Panhandler's Program, Comic Heckler's Certificate, Bureaucratic Apathy Academy, Political Prevarication Program... among others of course  ;D

Come now, getting on the doctoral track is almost proof of a second rate intellect.  Those who know, do; the rest get an education and when that fails -- teach.

I think you are taking a too narrow view of things as a lot of people get their PhD with the primary intent to do research, which often comes with a teaching requirement if done at a large academic institution.  Nothing wrong with getting paid to do science projects... ;)

Now a good observation, but 10% is WELL above the national average for those with a doctor level education.

Re: Pitbill's ? on "Other" Educational options

There are quite a few folks who get education that doesn't fall into the poll's categories.

One person stated they attended the US Navy's Nuclear Reactor training program. Probably a few others received college-equivalent training from the military sevice programs as well.

A few are members of well-organized unions which operate vocationally-oriented educational programs for their members and aspirants. These programs qualify them for well-paid positions often exceeding the salaries of "managers" and "bankers".

Technical people quite often have hundreds, if not thousands, of hours invested in training programs which come from manufacturers of technical products and the software industry.

We also have that difference between 2 year college degrees (Associates), 4 year college degrees, Master's programs (5-6+ years) and certificate programs from various commercial and public educational institutions which was not defined in the polling setup.

Pick and choose carefully among the advice offered and consider the source carefully. PM, Skype or email if you care to chat or discuss

Guys, thank you so much for sharing! The results are very interesting so far! It appears that we have people of all levels of education here, and even some exotic ones ;) We are a really diverse community! ;)

Wow, I always considered it to be vice verse - I mean, when you're a little child, under 6, for example, it doesn't really matter at all what kind of educational background your friend's family have. So it's so easy to communicate with anybody :) Then it gets a bit more difficult :)

I don't have any problem eating my popcorn  Just pointing out the obvious that those who deride the educated the loudest invariably suffer from the sour grapes syndrome. I didn't comment on the rest of your post: "Those who know, do; the rest get an education and when that fails -- teach." Yes, I am sure that when you need a doctor you will someone who just "knows" without an education  :rolleyes2:

LOL all of this reminds me of this.....

"The Smartest Man in World???
There was a plane with three passengers, a priest, a boy scout and the The Smartest Man in World.

The pilot came from the cockpit wearing a parachute, he stated that the plane was in auto pilot mode and the plane would crash in a few minuets, but, there was a more serious problem, there were three of them and only two parachutes so they would have to decide who was not going to get a parachute. Then he jumped out of the plane.

The Smartest Man in World said, "I have to have a parachute as the world definitely needs me because I am The Smartest Man in World." Then he grabbed a pack and jumped out of the airplane. The priest turned to the boy scout and said, "I am ready to meet my maker, I have lived a full and fruitful life you may take the parachute and go and make your mark on the world." To which the boy scout replied, "I came prepared, we can both have a parachute, The Smartest Man in World just jumped out of the plane with my back pack on."

The gentleman knocking formal education as being for "second rate minds" is himself a fool in that regard...at at least he lacks experience with some of the truly bright people in various disciplines for which a doctorate is a prerequisite.

In my case, I have a doctorate--but in law, where that was a required entry into the profession. I had no desire to practice, but wound up doing it for a decade anyway. My desire was to have the background. Some incredibly bright people were in school with me--certainly not "second rate minds" by any fair and objective measure.

My wife is a medical doctor and also the brightest lady I have known. Again, for a physician a doctorate is a requirement. While not all physicians are first-rate intellects by any means, a sizable number truly are.

Personally, I have never cared one way or the other about whether my mate had a formal degree or not, but I was quite interested that she be intelligent. It so happened that the lady I found is a physician here in Ukraine.

That said, in the FSU many people have gone through a university course of one sort or another. It is true that some are not very good schools, but that is true all over the world and is by no means a unique phenomenon here.

Yes, I agree. If we do find cures for cancer on day, it will be largely due to the work of countless PhD's in biochemistry and other such researchers. To put down an entire class of people as second rate intellects or minions of fools is for me the true sign of stupidity  :rolleyes2:
