What is ssoobschenie
« on: January 18, 2011, 07:05:45 AM »
Thank you for your ssoobschenie and a lot of pleasant pictures.

The above sentence was run through translator before sent to me, so don't know what the orginal word was.

- - - - - -

Целую и обнимаю

One translator gives:  The whole also I embrace

Another gives:  I kiss and embrace.

Another gives:  I kiss and hug.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

Thanks Jooky and Doll.

So what's with Целую being translated as both 'whole' and 'kiss?'

Also, I have found that 'sex' can be translated as 'floor.'

It seems that 'sex' is coverted to 'gender' and the Russian word for gender is the same as for floor.  Or something like that.

Unless you know this person and know this person is real - this might just as well be Nigerian scammer. Although the word "soobschenie" can mean "a message" or "connection" (as in "zheleznodorozhnoe soobschenie" - railway connection), such in Russian e-mail it is usually suggested "otpravit' soobschenie" (send a message), normally this word is not used in colloquial speech to define a letter or an e-mail. Whenever russian-speaking people exchange e-mails, they would normally say "spasibo za pismo" (thank you for the letter), or "spasibo za otvet"/(thank you for reply).
I would not claim that nobody uses this word, since some people may use it, but such instances are rare.

Literally this word means "notification", when in the verb form - "to make information/facts/plans common/shared" - as in "make information shared between two individuals". It also defines "togetherness", since there is similar word "soobscha" - which means acting together, upon prior consent, or another word "soobschnik" - an accomplice.

I think there is a subtle difference in meaning between "notifying" somebody (of anything) or just exchanging thoughts & feelings in a letter. Maybe this is why in colloquial speech this word is not as commonly used to define "a letter"

Thanks Mies for your further explanation.

The woman who wrote the  message to me is not a girlfriend of mine, but rather a business woman that I met.

Sometimes she sends me her message completely in Russian and I run through the online translators.

In the last instance, I think she put her message through an online translator and it kicked out that word soobschenie as a transliteration and she didn't notice it wasn't an English word.

She actually has decent English skills for talking, but not for writing.

What about the second part of my question:

So what's with Целую being translated as both 'whole' and 'kiss?'

Also, I have found that 'sex' can be translated as 'floor.'

It seems that 'sex' is coverted to 'gender' and the Russian word for gender is the same as for floor.  Or something like that.

It is just a coincidence : целый (целая, целое, etc)- mean "whole".
If it is "I am kissing" then it is (я) целую.

The stress is different.

seconding Doll's reply. In this particular case, the two words cEluyu (Accusative or Genitive, feminine gender, of "the whole") and celUyu (i'm kissing you) - are homonyms. They are spelled the same way, and only stress is different in pronunciation, but the meanings and the development of these words are unrelated.

about sex <-> floor - you are absolutely right.
"gender" = "pol"
but also "sexual life" = "polovaya zhizn'" --> when translated back to English is "a floor life".

in ukrainian "sex/gender" = same noun as "posture".

Thanks more Doll and Mies.

The sex = floor also explains a lot.

So when we guys write "I want to have sex with you" and run it through the translator and send to FSU women they get confused.

One replied:  "Of course I will have sex with you, but not on the floor."
