West Virginia is coal country - traditionally quite poor.  Abused by east-coast power brokers in the 19th and early 20th centuries - it is probably as interesting as rural Siberia on the cultural side, though, apart from the strip mines, it is basically one big forest, which can be very pretty.  D.C. is not far away, however and you can easily enough manage the trains up to NYC for the weekend.  Never been to Atlanta.  It is one of our 2nd tier cities, Seattle used to be there too but now has made it into the same category as Boston, San Fran, Dallas, Miami.  Other comparable cities to Atlanta would be Minneapolis, Minnesota, Austin, Texas, and Portland, Oregon.  I spent quite some years in Minneapolis - one of best places I've been.  Portland might be my favorite of them all.  These cities have an educated population with nice things like good restaurants, interesting homes -- good places to live if you do not require the big city hubub.

I live in Tampa, Florida.  Florida has no state income tax, and Tampa has no city income tax.  A person living in NYC must pay state and city income taxes, and they are not small.  Living in Tampa thus saves much each year in income tax.  Housing and many other living expenses are less costly in Tampa.

As in most cities in America we have art performances, including traveling theater productions with New York actors.  Likewise our shopping is excellent.   Nevertheless, the variety and choices here in Tampa do not compare with NYC.   And our museums (except for Dali) are well below NYC's.   However, there are airplanes.

I know a few women who fly to New York on the occasional weekend for the best art performances and more shopping choices.  The flight is three hours.   One can take several such weekend trips per year and still have money left over from not living in NYC.  And when we stay home in Tampa, we have sunshine and no snow.  We can play golf every month of the year.  We can swim in the sea comfortably for about 6 months of the year.

Then it is easy.  Lots of great towns in the US/Canada that are very quiet and attractive.  Surprising you are open to Canada since you do not like Winter.  I'd watch your step with WV though.  It might be very fine and I'm certain lot's of great people there but it's hillbilly country, you encounter the fundamental religionists there too.  I'd like it because of the roots country music a very different thing than the glam-pop country of Nashville, Memphis and Texas.  Though too there are only so many Allison Krausses.

I too have had my heart broken many times by local members of the opposite sex, but I wouldn't expect foreign women to be that much different.. Right on, Mikhail.. My cousin lives in a small town 70 miles East of where I live and she knows my city better than I do because she travels here every other weekend.. She's been to all the museums, shopping centers, movie theaters, etc. I feel like I'm the one living in the middle of nowhere, because I mostly see the city from the window of a bus..

Gator, I used to live in Palm Harbor way back in the early 80s, not far from Tarpon Springs. The TPA are has grown from those days and downtown Tampa is unrecognizable, to me at least.

BTW, I used to fish for scallops at this public beach, I believe it has "Jones" somewhere in its name.

Huntington WV on the Ohio River is an interesting city in a beautiful area.  Marshall University is right downtown, so there are many related cultural and sporting activities.  I spent much time there along with Charleston and Parkersburg.  You can buy a modern 3BR house with basement for around 120k,
much less than most major cities.

In last December, I was there for spent my Birthday on Phuket

all 3 weeks was rain
..Something strange happens with the weather in the last 2 years. There's always rains rains season, recently the flood. It's risky to go there.Better to go to Cambodia or in Vetnam.Mne seems much more interesting and not trite. Although I love Bangkok, and Thai, but instability in the weather of this country I was annoying.

I'm at work or at home or for a book or on the Internet communicate with friends who are scattered in the world.My usual life involves only international communication and contacts.

Who goes to nightclubs anymore for entertainment, besides those who have nothing better to do than get high/drunk and hang out in a primitive environment?. SoCal is the only place to be: I live among strawberry fields, avocado and orange groves yet work in the city. Here you can alpine ski in the morning, swim in the ocean in the afternoon then take in the city night life. There quiet mountains where you can walk among the trees and noisy street faires. And then theres the weather the weather the weather....
