It has been five years since my adventures in Dnepropetrovsk that led to my very happy marriage and the birth of our daughter 2 1/2 years ago.

The bad news is that when you marry a good Ukrainian girl, she'll want to come home every summer to see family.  And that is my lot.

The good news is that Dnepropetrovsk is a delightful and fun city to visit.

I'll file a mini-trip report about my 10 days here and my adventures with a younger woman--my 2 year old daughter!

We are going to have a blast!

Those are scary words, BC!

I always knew that marrying a younger woman meant having a child with her.  And my little daughter is the greatest part of our lives.

But two children?  Oh, my!

But my wife has started to hint at it, so it likely will come to pass... :-)

This afternoon mom went to have coffee with old girlfriends.  So I took baby M to the movies--and we saw Jack Black and Angelina Jolie in KUNG FU PANDA 2!   But the characters were speaking Ukrainian, not English or Russian, so I focused on the visual.  My daughter does speak Russian but not Ukrainian, so she did the same.

It was a "great" date, regardless of the language barrier :-)

I got in to Dnepr Sunday; my wife and baby M had been here 3 weeks so I was very happy to see them.

Rather than stay with mama,  I rented an apartment for us through Cindy Agency in MOCT Tower.  It's a lot more western than most Dnepr apartments, and hey--how can you beat having a big grocery store and a movie theater in your apartment building?  Plus, wifi and AC are essentials to this old road warrior.

For newbies-- I recommend the traditional UA apartment stay so you can soak up the culture.  For me...been there, done that.

Here is a pic of our condo tower at MOCT.

The central part of Dnepropetrovsk is beautiful, due to a mixture of modern and historic building, and the refreshing Dnepr River.

I'll share a few pics from our walk this morning...

More embankment pics...

The round cafe with the red roof over the water is called the bobber building, since it looks like a fishing bobber.

Last night we went for a three hour walk in the park by the river near my wife's old neighborhood.

We hopped a street car (electric train) and paid our 25 cents each, and 10 minutes later, we were crossing the tracks into the park.   The view in front of me reminded of the New York City Central park that I have read about--circa 1900.

Women pushed babies in strollers, chatting happily as they meandered through the shady park.  People sat at park side cafes, having coffee or wine.  A ferris wheel beckoned those who wanted to swing high above the park and trees.

Teenagers skated by on skateboard and inline skates.  Young children begged parents to drop coins into games and rides.

This young girl takes a remote control ride in a car covered with Mickey Mouse decals...

These young ladies dress like they are on a date--not a stroll through the park.  Dressing up and looking your best when you go out is a mindset and a matter of pride.  I like it.

The mini-train is a big attraction for the toddler set.  Some moms jump in an ride with their little ones, as the train goes round and round, waving and blowing kisses with each pass.   Others stand and watch.

Condos in River City
« Reply #21 on: June 01, 2011, 12:15:38 PM »
Tonight we made the mile walk along the river to Mama's house for dinner.  She is an amazing cook!  Pork roast, new potatoes, salad, and borsht of course.  Desert was Pirojki; with cherry filling!  Simply delicious.

Tomorrow night we'll eat at the restaurant where we first met six years ago, and then hit the disco.

Shown is the picture I snapped with my iPhone of MOCT Tower, where we are staying.   Today we looked at a unit that is ready to be built out.  Condo price would range from $140,000 to $260,000, depending on water view and footage.  I "might" be interested in a second home here at that price and due to how livable this city is.  The same thing in Florida would be triple that money.  Plus, the prices I quoted are asking prices, so I assume a unit could be bought for less.

Note to Self-- Work on Russian Language.

Yesterday a cute reporter (see pic) stopped me on the embankment of the Dnieper River to ask for an interview.  Damn.  I wish I spoke better Russian!  I would have loved to talk to her! :-)  LOL

Yes, Dnepr is a beautiful city.  I like it even better than Kiev, which is also beautiful.  And yes, that is my wife in the pic you mentioned.

I'm having a blast visiting places from "the day."  I am going to post some "then" and "now" pics to contrast the city I spent a lot of time in six years ago.
