First bell/last bell
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:17:00 PM »
Raising school kids in Russia brings up some significant differences from how it is often experienced in the West. Of course many things are the same, but many things are new to our Western experience, too.

Usually each year I include in the Mendeleyev Journal a look at First Bell in September and Last Bell on/around 25 May. Now that only the youngest of three daughters remains at home, and she is a 3rd year student at Moscow State University, I've got to start posting reminders on my calendar about "Last Bell" or will miss it again next year.

The uniforms, the flowers, the music, the dancing....oh my, how could I forget?! My favourite scenes are in September for the little kids at First Bell. Everyone brings flowers for the teachers and it is almost like a national holiday with the student and parental involvement. Besides, who isn't moved at the wonder of small children and their excitement for life?!

Then in May there are the graduating seniors at 11th grade. After a day filled with programs, skits, choirs, and diplomas they're celebrating the beginning of new horizons such as college or University or work or travel.

So, instead of a big spread with commentary and photos, lets visit the good folks at www.listen2Russian.com and enjoy their presentation with photos, links to music and a nice video, too.

Please enjoy a fascinating look at this culturally important annual Russian/Ukrainian tradition: http://listen2russian.com/russian-culture/last-bell/last-bell.html
