Hello and здравствуйте!
« on: June 13, 2011, 11:19:16 AM »
Hello and it's nice to see you here on RWD :) Thanks to a friend of mine that recommended this board to me.

I'm a woman of 51. I live in Russia in small town on the Black sea called Tuapse. It's near to Sochi. I divorced long time ago and tried to find someone in my town but it's unreal. My daughter was telling me to find somebody on dating sites, but first i didn't have a computer, than i didn't have internet, so it was impossible. Finally i got everything i need and I registered on Mamba. A year of useless and unpromising conversations, one night stand proposals all the time and two or three platonic Romeos :) BTW, my son found a girl there and they live together now!
Now I'm visiting my daughter and she decided to definitely register me on couple of international dating sites. We made a profiles and everything was fine. But I still don't understand what to do. Guys coming, showing interests, I show interest to and nothing happens after. Is there something I do wrong? The second problem is that my English is at level 0 :( My daughter translates everything. I understand that I NEED to learn English. I've met a nice American guy and we chat on Skype, but I feel that I'm in trouble  :-\ I use Google translate to read.
I'll read forums because there is a lot of useful information. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Hope there are still guys who looking for a girls after 50  :)

Welcome aboard Lidia!  :welcome:

You do have a lovely Slavic face on your avatar  8)

And you are absolutely right about improving your English. Have you tried to speak English to your daughter at home? that's a great practice as well.

Please don't be shy to talk to that American guy on Skype, even if you don't feel comfortable with your English. If I'd be you, I'd use just any words that I know, supplementing them with hand signs and whatever :) I've heard about successful communications just by using a waterfall of English words that makes at least some sense, in absence of grammar :) it may sound funny but can be efficient anyway!!

Hi Lidia, if that's your picture in your avatar, I'm pretty sure lots of guys will be interested in you.  We guys are very visual; that's one of the reasons we are searching for wives in Russia.  There are many pretty and slender women there.

I think you are right that learning English will help you in your search. Not that there aren't lots of Germans, Danes, Italians, etc., who are looking for Russian wives.  But English is the language spoken by more Western guys who are looking for Russian wives.  If you learned even basic English you could communicate with Americans, Englishmen, Canadians, and Australians, plus a lot of people from other countries who have learned English.

It may take some time to find someone, because only a small percentage of guys are seriously searching and suitable for marriage.  But I believe if you keep trying you will find someone who is good for you.  Good luck to you.

Hello Lidia and welcome here. Just a few weeks ago I got an interest by a girl in Moscow and asked her to talk on Skype. She was willing to do that but warned me she didn't speak any English. And her english skills were practically zero, but we manage just fine using Google translation, both ways. We talk most nights for 2 hours and in only a few short weeks I can see big improvements in her english. She understand much more now than in the beginning as long as I speak real slow. She types in her Russian text and reads back the english translation, which is both so charming to listen to for me, as well as to teach her the proper pronounciation.

A man who is truly interested in you will be patient and helpful so that you can have some time to learn english. I wish you the best of luck

Yep, that's true.  And, he'll also speak with a Dracula voice, just to make things interesting.. >:D

Welcome aboard Lidia.  Your English skills will improve quickly with steady practice. You'll learn new words and grammar as well as remember words ad phrases you learned in the past.

Good luck!

Lidia, I think that getting a webcam would be good for you. You should still be able to show your live mimics and smile! In case you chose not to continue with someone, you can always delete him from your friends list in Skype or messenger.

Lidia, a non-boring way to learn English sounds could be renting DVD movies ;). Here is an example of a young lady being trained to speak English properly ;D:

Haha, you are right! Nice example, i like that movie! It's pity that we don't hear English, or any other language here in Russia. All movies and other programs were always translated. I see how my grand kids fluent in English because they watching all that Disney and Cartoon channels on satellite :)
Lily, yes you are right. I'll get one of course :)

My wife's English has improved 1000%  since she moved here.
Mine however has become substantially worse.

Hello.  I just looked at your profile: Tuapse, Krasnodarsky Kray.  I've been to Russia several times, including Sochi.  Like most men, I would not recognize that location.  I would suggest you change the City in your profile to Sochi.   Then in the ad, mention that you actually live in a small city near Sochi.
Men will frequently plan to travel to a particular city like Sochi and will be searching for ladies located in that city only.  Good Luck.  I would also suggest you add your profile to 5 more of the better sites.

Great movie Sandro! I would not mind finding a Professor Higgins who would be willing to train me in good English ;)

Any idea what was his interest in educating Eliza Doolittle? it does not look like it was a romantic one..

It became romantic in the end, but started as a bet by Higgins to Colonel Pickering that in 6 months he could turn Eliza into a lady by teaching her to speak properly, eliminating her atrocious accent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Fair_Lady).

Lidia,

Welcome!!!!

I admire your dedication to learn English.  It will not be easy, yet it can lead to a brand new life and a loving relationship if that is what you seek.

I have dated off and on over many years a 46-yo Russian woman who spoke zero English when we first met.  I knew more Russian than she English, and I am at Level 0 Russian.

It was painfully slow in the beginning.  A major help was the use of a hand held electronic translator.  Somehow we had a lot of fun together. Somehow we survived the misunderstandings.  Somehow we managed to advance our relationship.  It requires a lot of patience, determination, sense of humor and sense of adventure.

Hello Lidia, and welcome! Don't worry about your English, it seems just fine to me and certainly way better than most RW's in this pursuit.. :)

I must have missed that movie...but maybe they need something more basic to start out with.   I was probably watching something like this instead:

Hi Lidia! My complements to your daughter's English ;) Speaking of which - I had a student just like you (I'm a teacher of English) - close age and same goals. She learned basic level of English in a year and then improved it communicating with foreign guys. Motivation and practice are the most important things here, so if you're really into this thing - you can learn English pretty fast. It can be useful anyway, even if you decide to stop looking for foreign hubbies :)
