Gone With The Wind
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:21:51 PM »
I'm sure you ladies are glad to hear a new question.

How many have seen the American film "Gone With the Wind", and did you like it?

I am trying to understand EE/FSU women better and I keep thinking of that film.  There are certainly differences, but as an American born in the South I can at least understand the women in the film.  Maybe if there is something in there you identify with I can understand you a little better.

Scarlett is somewhat selfish, and I do not mean to imply that EE/FSU women are like her.  There would not be a story about her if she was the most virtuous woman.  There is one scene in particular that comes to mind as I read profiles on mamba and read stuff here.  Scarlett is dressing for a gathering and being told all of the ways that a lady should eat and act and talk.  She is not pleased with this, but then goes to the gathering and acts exactly as she was supposed to.

Interesting movie anyway.  I think it's the "Anna Karenina" of the United States.

Thanks for your time!

Brian :)

My ex-wife from Moscow loves the film.  She has viewed the film multiple times and she thinks Scarlett is perfect.  An impressive charateristic of Scarlett is her determination.   Scarlett's determination pales next to my ex-wife's.

Another RW (the best RW ever IMO) also knows the film.  We spent a day in June driving in the plantation country of Louisiana.  She thought it fantastic even though Louisiana is not Georgia.

I watched the movie and  liked it.  Although I find some Scarlett”s qualities to be good to have, for example, her abilities to survive, do not get despondent, to find ways out of a plight admire me, I would not choose her to be my friend and I would not like if the majority of women were like Scarlett. The woman who really impressed me favorably in the movie was the wife of the guy that Scarlett loved. She was really amazing woman, she reminds me of my husband's daughter, the world would be a better place if people like her increase in their number.

I do not see a similarity between Scarlett and Anna Karenina. Could you explain what resemblance you have found between them?

I would see more of a similarity to the wild west frontier days.  Women were scarce in the west so the mail-order-bride scene began:

Sorry for the confusion.  I did not mean Anna Karenina the character was similar to Scarlett O'Hara.  I meant that "Anna Karenina" the novel was similar to the novel "Gone With the Wind"...they both are epic novels centering around a woman, her society and her choices.  Perhaps I am not even correct in this.  I read "Anna Karenina" 25 years ago.
