Russian Dolls Show on Lifetime TV
« on: August 07, 2011, 09:41:54 AM »
Recently read about this new show.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903454504576488531561517652.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

Anyone knows where to watch it online? I could not locate it on youtube so far.

Just found in Daily Mail: Russian Dolls premieres on Lifetime TV on August 11.

Thanks.  What's a nice woman like you doing in a place like Russian Dolls? ;)

It would not be on YouTube until after it airs on August 11, and probably not then.  The producer, Lifetime, is one of the more widely availble channels on cable TV.  It is focused on entertainment for women.   So perhaps your cable companies in Canada will carry it.

http://www.mylifetime.com/lifetime-tv-schedule says it airs at 10:00 pm Thursday.  I suggest you register to their website.

I saw this blurb:

Quote

Leaders from New York's Russian-speaking community are calling on Lifetime to pull the plug on its new reality television series “Russian Dolls,” due to what they think is a stereotypical portrayal of life in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach community.

So the show should be good for some laughs.

I don't believe the beauties will be highly educated, and their concept of fun will differ too.  I just feel that it will portray most of your Brighton Beach sisters as shallow, cunning and trashy (by my standards).   However, I will try to watch it unless the Sheep Dog trials are programmed at the same time on BBC.

Do you have Lifetime on your cable?

I heard about that show as well, it is only curiosity really how they'll portray Russians in the USA! ;D Well as synopsis said- lots of vulgar stuff, and dirty gossips , are they still Russians? That is the other question ;D

Oy, you have no clue. I watch (tortured soul) last night along with my wife. It was plain sick. It was a bunch of Jewish Princesses (even had the same accent) talking about how to get a guy with lots of money; how to spend a lot of money; and how to look tacky as much as possible.

My wife kept asking me to switch channels and I told her that I was going to watch this garbage only once in my life. That was it.

Young NYC Russian Devs out to specifically marry up to fleece top NYC bachelors is nothing new..
It's actually been a pretty long standing (and seemingly fairly accurate in that circle) stereotype in upper NYC society parties and circles, and covered numerous times in all sorts of media and major magazines..
enough that they have had slang names for *this* the last decade.

reality tv just finally decided it might make ratings?

Not only I don't have any cable, I don't own any TV for about ten years already :)  that's why I ask for any online watch option.

Well, I have my own concepts of fun and of spending time ;) it is a pity that my American sisters may be portrayed the way you describe it. I'd prefer to watch and see someone on the level of Russian noblewomen who fled to the West in 1920x...

How is the show, anyone watched it?

Thank you so much OlgaH!  :-*

Kudos to Eva, she is wonderful with her desire to sing, dance and to have fun! But what Marina and Michael did is definitely no good :( What a mentality towards older people  :-X do they seriously believe that the olders should not be entitled to any fun in life?  :(

Diana's English is great, I have not noticed any accent in her speech.

Especially I am curious to watch Renata. She is so beautiful and looks great on the screen.

I'd prefer to watch and see someone on the level of Russian noblewomen who fled to the West in 1920x...
Maybe you should search for some French show, seems they mostly fled to Paris ;). Their husbands farmed or drove taxi cabs:

RUSSIA'S EX-NOBLES MAKE GOOD FARMERS; Exiled Counts and Princesses Run Gardens and Successful Dairies in France. GENERALS AS TAXI DRIVERS They Have Forgotten Politics, They Say, and Are Becoming Satisfied with Their Lot. Few Saved Their Fortunes.

They even had their own Union:
Quote
Last but not least there is the archival section of the André Savine Collection. Among the items represented in this sub-collection are the archives of Russian émigré book publishers, booksellers, and libraries from around the world. Another large archival unit is that of the Union of Russian Taxi Drivers in Paris

Sandro, there are a few online sources on the topic, on youtube after all, where I can watch them for my curiosity and pleasure. Besides, some years ago I received a wonderful gift from this site, a pictured album 'Beauty in Exile' which is now on my bedtable :)

My point was that it would be good to see modern people of the same level. There are definitely some out there ;)

You are welcome, Lily. But the most interesting part is the comments on youtube with some of them I agree.

I don't believe the beauties will be highly educated, and their concept of fun will differ too.  I just feel that it will portray most of your Brighton Beach sisters as shallow, cunning and trashy (by my standards).

Gator, I think your words are to the point.

An unlikely wish, Lily. Grooming a child into a refined Russian nobleman/woman was a process requiring time, money and an appreciating social atmosphere.

Money is still plentiful in certain circles, the two other factors not much ;).

I think an appreciating social atmosphere should be before money as it plays a more important role than money. Some representatives of the Third Estate, "koo-pye-chye-stvo" in Russian (merchants), had more money than the noble aristocrats but...

Olga, I was not listing those factors in order of relative importance ;).

Anyway, money WAS an important factor, needed to have children attend the 'good' schools, probably have tutors for dancing, deportment, music and whatever other skills were deemed important to make a good impression - and find a good match - in their contemporary society.

And, in the case of girls, don't forget the latest fashions from Paree :D.

Sandro, I understand you did not list  :)

indeed money also is important factor, but I still think the social atmosphere and especially a family plays much more important role  :)

Thank you, Olga, for a glimpse at part of the show I'm not sorry I missed.

There's nary a shred of anything "Russian" about these Brooklyn princesses that I can detect, save their heritage.

Material girls with hilarious accents. Roll back the calendar 60 years and you've got the bimbos in Goodfellas...

Vaughn, you are welcome.
I don't think we need roll back the calendar. The show "Russian Dolls" reminds me some American shows like Bad Girls, Bredezillas, House wives and so on just some nuances. And actually the show staged in the same manner that attract a not so bright shallow audience interested in the "bitchy trash" and doesn't like to strain the brain.  From the first episode you can see that the show is very scripted, in Russian communities Russians don't talk to each other in English.

BTW I like Goodfellas, Wonderful actors, and Martin Scorsese is one of my favorite film directors.

Olga ! Totally agree with you. Russian people do not talk to each other in english , it is all staged and badly acted.Thank you for this little episode, did not watch it till the end though:)) I think it is like the same show they used to have Jerseylicious or something about italian community, the same scenario ,-the same stuff different title, only Russian dolls are even more trashy, unfortunately, it is just a shame !Though I suppose they can not be called Russians fully, they are  more of an American products, I think, I might be wrong!

Lily,

I apologize.  Before seeing the show, I called these  суки your "Brighton Beach sisters."  They are your 'black sheep' distant cousins.  Maybe they come from fine Russian families and have simply been corrupted by American ways.  :)
