I need an advice... I think that I'm been scammed.
« on: September 30, 2011, 03:14:47 PM »
Hello!. Couple of months ago I signed up in AFA (A foreing affair or loveme.com or whatever it call). I started to correspond with a girl of their website, a beautiful girl by the way. As I read in other web sites about rusian brides advices I put my personal contact information in the very first letter that I sent to her. She answered me, by mail of course and I had to pay $10 for it and she said that they are not allow to see my contact information. So, I made a question to AFA about this situation and they said that she has to sign an IMBRA form (I don't know what tha f' is that) to allow her to see my contact information wich it's seems suspicious to me... anyway. I sent her a letter back and I told her about this IMBRA form. She answered me and said that as soon as she meet with her manager (I guess that she talks about her AFA manager) she's gonna sign the paperwork and stuff. That was the last letter.
There's a couple of things that makes me doubt, 1. She is to good to be truth: I saw her pictures and she is extremely beautiful. I would said that she is a model or something. However she said that works in a bank, should I belive this?. She also says that she likes me and I think that we have a couple of things in common, should I belive this too?. 2. AFA doesn't let her to se my contact information: Why is that? according to them is because some IMBRA agreement, but anyway I'm not a US citizen and as far as I know the IMBRA it's a US goverment office.
Unfortunately I just arrived to this forum, so I didn't aware about this "pay for play" agencies, such as AFA. Spite of this, I think that it's too soon to asume that she's not real, that she's a scam. So, I thinking in send a couple more of letter and I'll ask her for she tell me her contact information and see what's gonna happend.
What do you think?, what do you think that I have to do?, am I scammed?. Thanks for your help.

Don't spend one more cent with anyone or any site and focus for the next few weeks/months on reading this site from start to finish. When you have done that you wont have all the answers, but you wont have so many questions.  ;D

IMBRA doesn't apply if you're not a US citizen anymore than  the UK language competency tests apply to a US citizen's marriage to a foreign national.

If you are confident you made it clear that you will not be in future contact except through your provided contact information then you have done all you can do. Why would you continue throwing away $10 per letter?

Chalk this up to your education on why pay for communication sites are not encouraged on RWD. Read the Commandments for a crash course on this process.
Pick and choose carefully among the advice offered and consider the source carefully. PM, Skype or email if you care to chat or discuss

So, you mean that I should make clear to her that I won't keep our correspondence through AFA, and if she really exists and she really likes me, she could get in touch with me whenever she wants, since I've already sent her my contact information. Something like that?.
As about to pay for communication, like I said before, I didn't know about this forum just until a couple of days ago and the very first letter I sent it about two weeks ago.
Where can I read the Commandments?. Thanks...

Search the site for the 10 Commandments.

Yes, when YOU decide it's time to quit paying for communicating with someone you feel is worthwhile dating, send them your contact info or, God forbid, do a video conference and explain it to her personally. Why let someone make money off of the process any longer than necessary to facilitate your intro? Why have that nagging doubt that she's motivated by personal profit/commission? Make it clear that you will no longer be communicating through the site on a fee per communication basis.

Of course, if you are signed up with an organization that charges for contact info (always read the fine print) then the fair thing to do is to pay the rate.

If she is into you, she'll stay in contact. If she doesn't send you an email or call your Skype, then she's not. It's not that complicated.

The scam is in the ten bucks a letter! Better to cut your loses and move on to a reputable site.
Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else :)

Lucky that you found this site sooner rather than later and you're only out a few bucks--coulda been pricier.  Usually in the pay-to-play they look 2 good 2 be true.  It's a standard dog and pony show.

If I have all of this right...A Foreign Affair & other similar web sites are in business to arrange introductions.
I see nothing unseemly in charging a [one time] $10 intro fee...after all, they are 'in business'.

Traditionally here at the Discussion,  a true scam arises as   a [prospective lady friend] starts hitting on someone for money here and there & money for this and that before someone has even met face to face.
Don't do that. It's stupid.

Multiple issues....

Nothing at all wrong with services which charge for facilitating introduction(s).

Not even anything wrong with those which charge for communications (assuming of course that it is fully disclosed when signing up). Those who whine about the fine print get little respect from me. If it was clear in the initial agreement that a fee was necessary for contact info, all well and good. Insisting  on staying on a pay per letter site has almost always been regarded as an agency trick/scam which the gal is participating in even if they somehow think they are in some sort of contract.

I regard it as the girl "scamming" when the gals are getting compensation partly due the volume of charges (communications, translations, English lessons, lodging, transportation, etc.) they convince the client to incur. Insisting  on staying on a pay per letter site has almost always been regarded as an agency trick/scam which the gal is participating in even if they somehow think they are in some sort of contract. Maybe some distinguish the girl scamming versus the agency though.

The traditional "scams" of visa fees, reservation fees, Grandma's kidney, fines and such seem to have dropped off over the last couple of years.

I don't recall any stories of visa interview preparation or major medical events the last few months or so, did I miss any?
