Travel to norway on polish visa
« on: October 03, 2011, 01:38:51 AM »
Got a question.......a friend of mine a UW, has just received a polish visa and she wants to visit freinds in norway, not sure which means(the travel) but she is concerned what will happen when she tries to cross polish border to norway. Don't know much about visas in eu countries or how it works for travel between countries. Any ideas? Thanks

Norway and Poland are Schengen countries, and Norway is not an EU country by the way.

If it is a Schengen visa for short stays up to 90 days, should be good to go.

When flying, airlines may ask to see the visa when checking in.

Did she list Norway as one of the countries she planned to visit when she applied for the visa?  Even if not, it should not prevent her from doing so 'on a lark'.

thanks for help....
@Kunst....I only relayed the info i was given, she called her polish visa an eu visa. Yes, I know norway is not eu country.....that is maybe why she is concerned.

@BC....I didn't ask if it was a schengen visa, it sounded like she didn't think it was. I will ask. To be honest, it sounded more like she was trying to 'slide' into norway by getting polish visa.

The others have answered more of less.

The official immigration site is udi.no and you can see the visa exemption page here; http://www.udi.no/templates/Tema.aspx?id=7403

Reading info at http://www.washington.polemb.net/index.php?document=104 it does mention a 'national visa' but the wording is quite 'quirky' as to whether or not such would be a Schengen Visa.

In any case look at http://www.wanderlass.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/schengenvisa.jpg

This one for France, but in any case would clearly show 'Schengen' at the top.  You can ask her to send you a copy.  If dubious just mark out the personal info, numbers etc and post it.

I guess there's a possibility she has a work/residence permit. Either way, she should be able to travel to Norway without a problem. The UDI are very helpful people and if there's any doubt she can always email them for confirmation (a 2-3 day reply is normal) or phone them.

On most of the Polish sites, long stay permits for non EU citizens are for Poland only, but do allow transit travel for 5 days.
Visas and residence permits issued by Poland after 21st December 2007

Quote
On 21st December 2007 Poland will start issuing uniform visas (A, B, C) valid for the entire Schengen territory and will continue issuing long-stay D visas and residence permits, valid only for Poland.
Holders of Polish D visas (issued before 21st December 2007 as well as after that date) will be entitled to a maximum 5-day visa free transit through the territory of other Schengen States.

The normal tourist visa would be a C visa

I just assumed they were. My wife and I recently traveled to Europe and entered into Italy so that is where we got her Schengen visa. I researched it (I thought) quite thoroughly and I saw nowhere, for Italy anyways, that there were other visa options for tourist.

We are just assuming she's a tourist in Poland but perhaps she's BillyB's MIL to be and working there. ;)

As BC points out though, it's possible she has a visa only valid for Poland. This European visa thing can be a bit of a minefield.

There are 3 links to conditions for Poland.
She might want to check the Article 4 clause about staying no more than 5 days in Poland.   But would take a lawyer to decipher it all.

There is another visa separate from Schengen called a "Polish National Visa" for 20 euro which only allows visit to Poland:
http://photo.ukrinform.ua/eng/current/photo.php?id=376053

And there is also a separate process for Ukrainians living within 50km of Poland border to travel up to 50km into Poland.

                             Article 4
      1. Citizens of Ukraine, valid travel
documents and visas issued by the competent authorities of one of the
states - parties of the Executive Convention of June 19, 1990
( 987_005
) to the Agreement between the Governments of the Economic Union of
Benelux, the Federal Republic of Germany and the French
Republic on the gradual elimination of controls at the common borders
of 14 June 1985 (   987_004    ), or visas issued
by the competent authorities of the Czech Republic, or who have permission to
temporary or permanent residence in those states
may go through the territory of the Republic of Poland to the country
of destination and back to the territory of Ukraine the basis of valid
travel documents without transit visas to Poland.      In such cases, up residence in the Republic of
Poland shall not exceed 5 days from the date of entry.
