Another Introduction
« on: October 03, 2011, 12:47:23 PM »
Hi all,

It was by chance while browsing online dating services that I came across this forum. It is interesting to read peoples experiences, whether good or bad about dating or marrying a foreign lady; in the case of this forum, more specifically RW or UW.

I guess a little bit about myself is in order.  I’m a 55 year old male born in Australia now living in the US (US Citizen). Ironically I meet my wife online, not a dating service but a forum in 1997 – 1998. I know we both travelled back and forth from Australia and the USA for about two years with a face time of about 9 – 12 months. Got married in the USA on 9th December 2000 and finally I was allowed in the US January 2002. I went back home to finish my studies at night school in Software Engineering. I guess at this point I should also mention my wife is an AW.

I thought of myself as a mature well adjusted male. For some reason when I arrived in the US I just froze. I was scared. It did take me awhile to break out and reinvent myself. I started work at bottom of the rung and now have ended up as a Manager of a store. If it wasn’t for a caring, understanding and patient wife we may have ended up in divorce.  As it turns out, it was my turn to return the favor. I shouldn’t say favor but duty to a loved one. For four years I cared and watched while my wife Barbara fought cancer only to lost that fight in November 2010.

Speaking for myself I can certainly sympathize with the difficulties associated with moving to a foreign country. Some people have absolutely no problems and others drown, and there are those in between. I do consider myself to be very fortunate. I love the US and have no desire to move back.

I apologize to members here while not directly related to the FSU just a Joe trying to explain his experiences and admittedly I still have a lot to learn.

Cheers

David

Hi David and welcome to RWD!

You certainly bring another twist of diversity to the forum and please do stay and learn or teach what you will.

I should point out however, that you will shatter more than a few members (most of them transient) perceptions of AW. Seems you had a real gem. My sympathies on losing her

Thank you, and yes Barbara was a gem.

I have to say there are those that are less than desirable in all countries   ;)

I'm reminded not long after arriving I threw my back out. I was covered under Barbara's insurance but didn't know how it worked, I had assumed it was the same in Oz. Got x-rays, treatments etc, then the bills started rolling in.
"Honey are all these medical bills",
"Oh I threw my back out and went to see the Doctor,"
"Nooooo"

Then she went on to explain how the system works here in the US. I had never heard about "in network" or "out of network" I certainly know now  :D

Sorry for your loss, Moonshine (odd name for an OZ)....

But I found it interesting that you actually had some degree of difficulty meshing in with the US society when you first arrived considering you spoke English. Also, from my personal experience, Aussies are generally welcomed here. At least from where I live (westcoast).

Heck, for the most part, Olivia Newton John & Crocodile Dundee made you folks almost part of the American knit.  :D

I was watching a show on prohibition.

I know what you mean. I can't explain it myself why I felt that way. I have had no ill feelings made towards me on the contrary the opposite. Everyone here has made me feel welcomed, other than saying "oh you're British"  :-[  I find that amusing.
