Shipping boxes from Ukraine to Canada
« on: February 07, 2012, 06:03:40 AM »
Hi there,
I'm recently married to a great Ukrainian girl, and we just got the go ahead for the move. I've been searching around for a cheap and slow way to get some heavy boxes (200kg) to Canada, and it seems impossible - the ocean shippers will only deal in 20' container loads - around $6000 to a nearby port. Everything else is insanely expensive air transport. Has anyone done this or is time to talk storage locker / giving it away to charity?

What exactly are you planning on shipping? Furniture? Clothes? Dishes?

I don't think it matters - just the weight and size of the package matter - have you done it?

Actually, if you're looking for a usable answer it does matter. If you're looking to "re-locate" all of her belongings, it's probably cheaper to leave them and replace what she needs when she arrives. This according to most that have done that. My wife and I toyed and checked. We decided to just go over with empty suitcases. We'll never get it all and it will take quite a few years but realistically she'll never need it all.

This is what my experience has taught me: unless it is a heirloom, unless it is of great sentimental value and unless it can be hauled back with you in your airline luggage, it is invariably best to leave it there...

To reply to my own question - I went with a "freight forwarder" over cargo airways. Not cheap though.

Meest was an option but still more expensive by about 25% than the way I went.
