CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) —  Foreigners convicted of sexually abusing children in Moldova will be  mandatorily castrated, according to new legislation introduced on March 6.

Parliament approved the new law by a majority, after lawmakers said the impoverished nation was attracting pedophiles from the West. It will become effective July 1.

It's only chemical castration.  Too bad it isn't the real thing.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Have you ever heard of false convictions?

Rare and certainly the exception instead of the rule in most places. Moldova likely isn't one of those places as it is likely more corrupt than it's neighbor Ukraine. Mind your P's and Q's no matter where you travel

on the other hand a WM can now be exposed to easy blackmail. a 15 yo girl or her parent can now tell a WM: "pay me $10,000 or I will tell the police that you had sex with me". This new law can be seriously exploited by the crooked cops who will demand payments and money hungry people alike.  Knowing the culture of the land there I'm afraid that the majority of convictions will come from men refusing to pay bribes, while the real offenders will just buy their way out.

Having been there I can tell you that it is one of the poorer countries of the FSU with remaining border issues, a breakaway region that wants to rejoin Russia, and Russian troops still stationed on her soil. Recent violent political protests have made it a place not exactly tourist friendly, although that should not discourage a man from visiting a lady there. Just behave yourself and be genuine in your intentions.

Moldova is a members of NATO's partnership for peace program and the Council of Europe. Having applied to the EU, Moldova is not going to castrate anyone. That is a threat designed to discourage sex tourists primarily from the Arab countries like Turkey whose men use Moldova's poverty to take advantage of Moldovan ladies, leaving an already poor state "holding the bag" when social services are strained by things like abandoned unwed mothers, etc.

As Ed says, it is corrupt. Very corrupt, signs of an ineffective government and poverty.

ML.....are you implying anyone here should alter their plans?  :-[
I think only the guilty would have to alter their plans. I would have no problem
still visiting moldova. You have to be more careful with the police at night, especially if you are
with a lady walking in centre, they do ask for identification at times. Taxi's a must at night.
Good point Boe.....always have to be careful.

Eduard and FP have a good point that if the woman you are visiting decides its 'payback time' you could be in for a lot of trouble, even without any kind of corrupt interference.

I see the point, but isn't it limited to 'child sexual abuse'?   Seems there would have to be a *very* elaborate plot involved, including actually abusing a child for evidence prior to the accusation...

Yeah, I guess if a lady one visits has a child or one handy, or borrows one, or rents one for a share of the potential proceeds..

Accusations of "rape" by the lady would be treated the same as they are now, or no?  admittedly I didn't read thoroughly but more of a basic Rapi-Scan.

The article refers to chemical castration of pedophiles.

Pedophiles visiting poor countries has always been a problem.  Ukraine had a huge problem with this, with pedophiles coming to Ukraine to "help" orphanages, until Ukraine joined some Interpol programmes.  There were a few scandals which alerted Interpol to the massive corruption in Ukraine, and Interpol has worked around that, but cooperation with Ukraine is still in place.  Moldova is even more of a failed state, so it does not surprise me pedophiles would be present there.

I suspect if someone were blackmailed, a foreign embassy would get involved.
