Subtitled movies
« on: March 13, 2006, 08:07:20 AM »
I was wondering if it is possible to get American movies subtitled especially if they are uncommon movies.  I sent a movie overseas and it is not subtitled and was wondering if there is a cheap or easyway to handle that.  I am working on doing the translation by hand by it is proving labor intensive.  In short It takes me an hour to translate 1 minute of movie dialogue.

DaKnack,

You have a couple of options. (pulling a Bruno here) Google gave me several options for subtitling movies. If you want to do it yourself you will also need to be able to burn the DVD to send.

Here is a company that does it:

Here is some software to do it:

American films with RU subtitles?

We buy lots of American films in RU and have them shipped here.  The DVD's almost always have english/RU subtitles but I would think some of the less popular/unknown movies might not have them.

Hey if you're good at it you could contact the film distributor and offer to sell your translated subtitles..

In any case you might want to first email the film distributor to see if a subtitled version in RU is available.

Try www.buyrussia.net or www.russianbuy.com  I'm not sure if this is any help, but give them a try.

Most of my Russian movies are war and gangster films.  I like their WW2 stuff, because I've always been curious of what it probably looked like from their side.  Bymer is a good one, about 4 dodgy fellows steaking a car and going cross country.

Matthew it must be a pretty unknown movie not to be available in Russian. I've got over 50 DVD's in my collection now & everyone is Russian & English. Any newer movies usually take about 3 months to get the English Version, sometimes less but the Russian version is usually out a month after it is released in theatres. Subtitles are a different story, not all come with English r Russian subtitles, some with hiether but will have French or Spanish or German. Depends on the company that made the DVD. I find the best to be EXTRABIT or SUPERBIT, they usually all have Russian & English but again not always insubtitles.

Ok, let go with my own method...

First, a usual DVD is a little more big that 9 Gigabytes... a single layer DVD is only 4.7 Gigabytes...

For resize the film, the best solution is use Xvid with mp3 Audio ... with double pass, i put 1 hours of film in 400 Megabytes... with some tweaking, i am able to put a year serie ( by example i can put "Lost" with 26 episode to one DVD )...

The file will be in avi format and can be play by all computer and the home DVD player certified MP3/DivX/Xvid ... so player can be find around 60$...

Now, for the subtitle... first, grab all subtitle present on the original DVD with SubRip... the result will be a .srt file. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubRip )

If your file for the film is "film.avi", you need name the srt file for english "film.en.srt", for french "film.fr.srt", for russian "film.fr.srt", etc ....

Ok, it is possible that the language desired is not on the original DVD... but it is always possible find the srt in the desired language via internet... by example, i use http://gabest.dyndns.org/sub/ for my serie...

After this, you need burn the DVD with the avi file and all the srt's...

When you play it on computer, the windows mediaplayer have some problem with subtitle but VLC, mediaplayer classic, etc... have no problem... only choice the subtitle language... several player allow dubble subtitle... a original film from china, with russian subtitle and english uptitle ;)

On the home DVD player who accept divx dvd, xvid dvd, mp3 cd... only insert the DVD and it begin play... select the subtitle language... only one possible...

I hope it help... myself, i use these method for my serie... almost 2000 episodes on 2 hard disk from 300GB... with mp4 file + ogg , a episode from 45 minutes is only 175 mb :D

Second step is the subtitles

called "Her Alibi".  I have it in English, but I could not even buy a new english only one.

Heres why:  Many people here have complained that FSU nations are given a bad rap in movies and always shown as evil villians.  This movie is a romantic comedy staring Tom Seleck ( Magnum PI) as well as Paulina Porzivoka ( or whatever her name is that big model from the 80's that married that huge dork from the Cars).  It was not a big hit, but I found it then to be quite funny (still do) and am especially interested in it again for 2 reasons.  For one, It was filmed in Baltimore where Son of Clyde and I live, and it shows a AM - FSUW relationship.  I thought even where it not filmed where I lived, it would be an ideal movie to send to women who you court.

On a side note if anyones got a copy of Night watch and day watch with English Subtitles: me love you long time.  I saw Night watch at the movies last week and really liked it.

I just popped out to amazon.com and did a search for it. They have new DVDs of this movie. I'm sure there must be other places to get it as well. There were also several Night Watch movies listed. Not sure which one you are looking for.

Ken

P.S. I have seen this movie several times and also enjoyed it each time.

You can find a lot of them on Amazon these days.

The translation is far from perfect. We have watched several Russian movies or series
with English subtitles, when Angel Eyes will point out Beeel! that is not a good translation.

Google's auto-translate feature can leave you thoroughly baffled or rolling in laughter. Sometimes it does a decent job but it's hit and miss  and not available for all titles.

A gal once told me that she and her niece often rolled on floor laughing when watching western tv shows translated into Russian.  They were both fluent in English also.

Then the niece married a British guy, moved there and watched same shows.

They were not nearly so funny in English.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.
