Where to shop for a Shirt and Tie
« on: July 22, 2012, 05:53:51 PM »
I was going to recommend a place to some guy on this forum in regards to wearing a shirt and tie in one of his photos.  However, I couldn't find that thread and I never did offer him a suggestion.

And, I'm sure that most of you guys do have your own places that you ordinarily shop at for such things.  But, I just wanted to suggest Express store's 1 MX shirts to that guy and whoever else is looking for a place to buy a shirt and tie.

Their shirt and ties are nice.  And, the 1 MX have two types of fits - Modern Fit and Fitted.  Modern Fit is the looser fit if you're not in very good shape.  But, the Fitted are tight around the waist, giving you a V-Shaped look on your body.  Seriously, the formal tie look, plus a v-shaped body is a double hotness for girls.

If you ever go shop at the mall, you'll see the male store attendants wearing the 1 MX shirt with a tie.  That's what attracted me to them.  I saw the male store attendants wearing them, thought that they looked nice and bought some for myself.

And, since people wear shirts and ties at my work, I had an excuse to buy and wear them.  I've actually gotten compliments from random women at work.  They're really nice shirts, and they have like this massive sale going on.  I think that it might have to do with it being the middle of summer.  So, now might be the right time to start buying them before it starts getting colder and they charge more.

I thought that I'd post this.  Maybe it'd help someone who wasn't sure where they could go to get a nice shirt and tie (or, at least just a nice shirt).   This thread is open to anyone else who has any other suggestions.

This is what I was talking about.  See that guy's waist?  It's tight around his stomach, which gives him a nice v-shape look.  It really gets women's attentions.

Pemdas-

'V-Shaped'  look?!? LOL. Are you kidding me? This is the MOB, man!

But anyway..."Express" do have a great selection of casual-formal, flat-front slacks. Photographer, Producer, Director, etc...styles. I especially like their low-waisted Producer-style cuts. Very comfortable and well-fitting. Nice product for the price ($50-60.00)

Not sure about their shirt collection. I'd rather go Calvin Klein. They're not very pricey either...Trend clothing usually aren't designed or made to 'last'. The thread count on the cloth used is very low and are usually low quality if they aren't either hybrid fabrics or polyester.

Additionally, these aren't generally for your typical MOB wife-hunters. I don't believe any fitted shirt are made for anyone with a sagging pear-shaped upper body. It's completely counter to the intent of the design. A burlap sack will have a better chance of a good fit to a typical MOBer.

As for pants, flat-front trousers can be immensely helpful to make them appear as though they're tens-of-pounds lighter although those low-waisted styles will be problematic. You have to remember, most of these guys are children of folks conceived within weeks after WW II, so they're generally lacking in the tush department these days. Moreover, the 'gut' will just make this feat that much more demanding if not downright impossible. It's tough enough as it is keeping their belt buckle facing outward instead of downward, you know.

This pic is a VERY conservative sampling of a typical MOBer. Conservative. Despite that fact, you can easily see the guy in the pic below is not even remotely similar to the pictures of those models in your posts. Visualization is easy from here on in.

Belts, belts, belts!!! Such an important accessory many men often overlook. Contrary to many of these men's opinion, brown and/or black colored belts DOES NOT go well with everything.

Why buy new?  The thrift stores are excellent sources for secondhand skivvies.   Your RW will be proud of how you have saved money.  And if the underwear has any holes, she will be happy to demonstrate her skills in sewing.

So do you dye yours or just "white out" skid marks?  ;D

P.S.: the above doesn't make much sense without the photo I embedded and later vanished ::).

Incidentally, how about cuff links ;)?

Go to a reputable tailor and get some dress shirts, slacks, and a nice suit.  And please, for the love of God, don't button up all three buttons on the suit. Only button the middle button. Allen Edmond shoes. Nice silk tie. Nice wrist watch.

And let's face it. Most of the guys on here are trying to rock the cradle of love. Those women's fashion tastes are more along the lines of True Religion jeans, maybe some Ed Hardy shoes, and Christian Audigier shirts.

Going over there dressed like a prole is not going to work out well. FSUW are very fashion-minded. If you get the chance, go shopping with an FSUW. It's fun to have a stylemaker. There are some great shops in Odesa. Lots close to City Garden.

Of course, some guys are so paranoid about scammers that they'd probably run for the hills if a gal said she wanted to go shopping. They'll also miss some of the co-ed changing rooms. Oh my....

One should take a tie and jacket to Russia but I wouldn't wear such for everyday events. However I agree with the OP in the spirit of his post that far too many guys travel to the FSU under-dressed.

I think that it was 2005 or so that riding home in the Metro one summer evening I watched an American couple, both in their 60's obviously lost and trying to figure out the Cyrillic Metro maps in one of the older style wagons. I normally would step over and offer assistance but was so offended and embarrassed by their dress. No kidding, he wore spandex shorts and a tank top almost resembling a black "wife beater" and she was in similar attire. Their clothing wasn't cheap by any stretch and they didn't appear low class, down to the jewelry they wore. He probably paid as much for the spandex as most of us would on nice dress pants. But it was offensive.

Mrs. M scolded me later for failing to offer assistance after I told her the story but I felt that given their lack of regard for themselves, and for the Russian people, that I stood back and let them find their own way. Hopefully they made it back to their hotel or destination.

Will a fitted dress shirt slay the babes? No. But neither will shorts and open toe sandals. However the OP has a point in that I'd agree that it better to overdress than be too casual because rarely does a WM overdress for his date. Sometimes Western guys are a visual embarrassment as she looks like she's off to a nice dinner theatre while he appears to be headed to a baseball game for all we know. He treats the trip as if it is a vacation since he's using vacation time to meet her, but she treats it as an important job interview. Big difference in perspective.

Perhaps the Executive Team isn't a fair comparison, but here are some examples of how leaders dress in Russia:

Prime Minister Medvedev always dresses well when at work at the White House, the PM Gorky residence, and in rare appearances at the Kremlin.

On the road however, he (as is Mr. Putin) dressed more relaxed. This is the Prime Minister recently on a visit to the Kirill Islands in the far east. He carries a tie for dinners and presentations but rarely wears it during daytime visits.

PM Medvedev, Kirill Islands market.

In Moscow, President Putin is seldom seen in anything but a suit and tie. Last Saturday this is how he looked when receiving the Russian Olympic team at the Kremlin Grand Palace.

Most of his days are spent working from the presidential residence in Novo-Ogaryovo (suburb of Moscow) and during office hours he wears a suit. This is yesterday's reception of the Italian PM, Mario Monti.

Even more so than PM Medvedev, when on the road Mr. Putin is a casual dresser. He is a "roll up the sleeves" and meet the local guys for a beer kind of politician if that fits the occasion.

Like most men over 45, Mr. Putin doesn't wear fitted shirts. He enjoys comfort. But he is in reasonable shape.

On the cabinet, one of the "snazziest" dressers is Minister of Transportation, Maxim Sokolov. From the suit to the shoes he is always well groomed.

Young RM/UM are all over the map when it comes to fashion these days.

I buy only dark colors, so the former's owners skid marks do not show.  The peter tracks are another matter. :D

We jest, but once in Iranian mountains in a blizzard, I shared a bed with my collaborator, and those sheets smelled as if they had been used  several times before us.  I was happy to get some sleep and stay warm. We got out of there after the roads were cleared.

And two of my golfing buddies went to Scotland many years ago before it was popular.   It was so cold and wet that one quickly grasps why the Scotch invented whiskey. They did not have to share a bed, but there was only enough hot water for one bath.  Each evening they alternated who bathed first.

In Vietnam, I slept in the mud and rain a couple of times.   Humans can be very adaptive.

Now that is funny....  I remember feeble attempts at repairing holes in socks and such.... 'Those were the days!!'

We even have a cleaning woman come in twice the week.  OTOH I keep cleaning the pool myself....

You don't really need to wear a tie for meeting a lady, unless it is for business meetings, going to the funerals, attending any black-tie events.

To meet ladies, you should be able to dress very well   (obviously not the guy in the yellow T-shirt photo - no offense to whoever he is).   You should wear clothing that makes you feel good and confidence.

Depending on your personality, shape and age, Ralph Lauren polo shirts is one to recommend.   Lacoste polo shirts is more recommend if wearing during hot weather as it is cooler than Ralph Lauren ones.

Neutral colours are always the best - other colours depending on your personality, shape and age.

You should be able to groom yourself - good hair cut, cut your eyebrows, cut off hair in the ears and noses lol.  Good grooming yourself will make you look much younger.

About buying a tie:
It's a good idea to keep it simple.  Often a solid colour can be most effective and a tie the exact same colour as the shirt can look very stylish.  Some ties can simply make too much of a statement and too much of a focal point.  on the other hand, if done with subtlety, ties can add pattern or dimension to a suit.  when thinking of patterns that would suit you, vertical lines and plain colours will make you appear taller, horizontal lines will make you appear wider.  Overly busy patterns of too many colours are not advisable.   Always try to ensure tie, shirt and suit are complementary to each.

About buying a tie:
One further caution if mixing with Britons: avoid their regimental/school ties, they might cause embarrassing questions ;).

When I first visited London, I was wearing the above tie (bought in Italy), and was asked if I had served with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders :-[ :D.
