Kiev : where to meet women

Ranetka,  Запорожье just happens to be my favorite name of a Ukrainian city as well! Haven't you ever wondered how this name came about? I've heard 2 versions:
1. derived from a combination of 2 words: "За" (beyond) and "Порог" (threashhold or doorstep) so in effect the name means "beyond the threashhold or beyond the doorstep"


2. derived from a combination of 2 words: "Запор" (constipation) and "рожa" (a slang word for a face) so in effect the name means "constipated face"

Both versions may have some truth to them, but who knows!?

As it is an old border town the first one would be more appropriate.

Quite possible that you are correct, Shadow, however the other version might make sense as well if you look at facial expressions of some of the residents...

I guess it's a religious thing - women tend to mention their celestial future somewhere near the 'finish' line.

In fact the city's name is coming from the word "порог" that has another meaning --- the rapids, and not the threshold 

So its name means  (the land) beyond the (Dnipro's) rapids.
