Soviet ICBM missile complex tour in Ukraine
« on: September 02, 2012, 01:33:36 PM »
For anyone intersted in cold war relics, there is a Soviet ICBM missile complex in Ukrane that is now a museum and open for scheduled tours.
The tour schedule is infrequent and dependent upon advance sign ups.
The cost of the tour ranges from about $320 for a private tour down to about $105 for 4 or more.
You are allowed to add on to an existing tour to get the lower price.

Video and more information is here:

http://tourkiev.com/tourtostrategic/

There is an existing tour scheduled for Sept 6 which someone can add themselves to at the lower cost.
Unfortunately I will not be arriving in Ukriane until Sept 7 and there are no other tours on the schedule at this time.
If anyone will be in Ukriane between Sept 8 and Oct 15 that would like to sign up for this tour please let me know by email or PM.

Here is the direct email address for the folks that run the tour:

WOW.. what an interesting possibility..  no, I won't be there at the same time you'll be, however, I will be taking this tour on my next visit even if I have to fund the 'group' myself.

Great find.. I hadn't heard of this until now...

You might not have to fund it yourself....

Update:
This company is very responsive.  Apparently they had private tours scheduled that are not shown on their web calendar.
They just sent me an email indicating that they had a private tour scheduled for Sept 26 and the party agreed to let me join the tour.
I am going to join that tour (there will be only 3 of us) and my cost is only $115.

BTW this same company also has Chernobol tours.  If I like the misile complex tour, I might take the Chernobol tour later.

Do the Chernobol tour first.

Then, if lights fail on the bus for the other tour, you can light the way.

ML , not a smart remark. I am from that area. It's a tragedy, ... not a joke.

When I was in Dneptroptvosk several years ago my girl arranged for us to tour a similar type building. I am not sure what the name was but it was very impressive. This building had several floors of Sputniks and the entire history of the Soviet race was chronicled from its inception. It was a Russian space Museum.
I will never forget the gentleman giving and explaining the tour and history. He had a gold front tooth.
I was then led to the rear of the building. Outside in an open courtyard were quite a few nuclear warheads.
Of course they were unarmed. I got chills as he explained to my girl that the large green one had been pointed at New York City during the cold war era.

Thanks for the info.  If I get to Dnep I will look it up.  It would be interesting to see the Russian version of the same type items my whole career was built on.

 And also when you go to toilets you don't need to switch on the light.

Yes, for many years we have jokes about glowing in the dark.  Also early cathode ray tubes would glow in the dark and small amount of radioactive material used in them.   LOL
